Postpartum strangury (dysuria with frequency and urgency) is also caused by yin deficiency generating internal heat due to excessive blood loss. The Kidney is the organ of extreme yin, governing the water pathways. Excessive blood loss leads to a deficiency of true yin, thus generating internal heat, causing urine to become strangury with astringency and pain. This is because heat pathogen lodges in the bladder (paom), where deficiency causes frequent urination and heat causes astringency and pain. If both qi and blood are combined with heat, and blood enters the uterus (baozhong), blood will follow the urine and be discharged as bloody strangury (xuelin). However, urinary retention and obstruction must be treated differently from strangury. Retention belongs to qi deficiency, whereas strangury belongs to internal heat causing astringency and pain. Therefore, Mizhai treats strangury using Zhiku Daochi San (Anemarrhena and Phellodendron Decoction for Guiding Out Heat from the Heart) and Tiao Yiyuan San (Powder for Regulating and Benefiting the Origin). Feng Shi stated: In cases of blood deficiency with heat stagnation, Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) and Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) should be used to tonify yin and nourish blood, nourishing the source of transformation, assisted by herbs that guide blood.
Zhiku Daochi San (Anemarrhena and Phellodendron Decoction for Guiding Out Heat from the Heart)
Shengdi Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Chishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Maidong (Rhizoma Ophiopogonis, heart removed), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, stir-fried), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 1 qian); Dengxin (Junci Medulla) (49 cun).
Postpartum hematuria accompanied by lower abdominal pain is caused by failed blood flowing into the bladder; if there is no lower abdominal pain but only astringency and pain during urination, it is due to internal heat. Both conditions are primarily treated with Xiaoji Tang (Small Thistle Decoction). *Zunsheng* uses Jiawei Shenqi Wan (Modified Kidney Qi Pill), removing Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) and Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), adding Shengdi Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) and Fazhui (Ash of Hair). As for hematochezia (blood in stool), it may be due to improper diet and lifestyle, or due to excess of the six climatic pathogens (liuyin) and seven emotions (qieqing), leading to damage of primordial qi and injury to the yin collaterals. It is treated with Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus Shengdi Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Guishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Baishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), and Fazhui (Ash of Hair).

Xiaoji Gen (Radix et Rhizoma Cirsii Japonici), Shengdi Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Chishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Puhuang (Pollen Typhae), Danzhuye (Folium Lophatheri), Gancaoshao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, tip) (each 1 qian); Huashi (Talcum) (2 qian); Dengxin (Junci Medulla) as guiding herb.
Within seven days postpartum, cough caused by external contraction of wind-cold, with nasal congestion, heavy voice, and aversion to cold, can heal itself by taking Shenghua Tang (Generate the New Decoction) alone, as it contains Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) and Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) to disperse the pathogen. Alternatively, Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) and Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) can be added to Shenghua Tang. If phlegm is present, add Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis). Jiawei Shenghua Tang (Modified Generate the New Decoction) is also used for these conditions. Generally, Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) is not used to induce sweating, and even if cough is accompanied by hypochondriac pain, Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) is not used to subdue the Liver, because the interior is deficient.
