Sun Wenxue Zi Yuan, who usually suffered from sores and scabies, recently developed red nasal discharge, facial and foot edema, and excessive sweating after bathing. The left pulse was large and forceful, and the right Cun pulse was also large. Based on the pulse, it was determined that excessive thinking led to stagnant Qi. He was prescribed a decoction of Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix), Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Chi Fu Ling (Polyporus with Hostwood), Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Yu Jin (Curcumae Longae Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Hua Shi (Talcum), and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix). The edema gradually subsided, but the red nasal discharge persisted, accompanied by thirst. The prescription was changed to Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Shan Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) for regulation, leading to recovery.
A woman suffered from pain in her left hip radiating to the knee due to her husband's indulgence in alcohol and sex, neglecting livelihood, which caused her much worry and depression. She had frequent urination, frequent bowel movements, abdominal distension and pain around the umbilicus, and dry mouth. The left hand pulse was rapid, and the right hand pulse was weak. Recently, she developed fever and aversion to cold, with sweating triggered by pain and constant restlessness. This was diagnosed as food stagnation, phlegm-fluid retention, and blood stasis flowing into the lower body, where the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian carried stagnant fire causing pain, with a fear of developing intestinal abscess (Chang Yong). One dose of Shen Xiao Gua Lou San (Miraculous Efficacy Trichosanthes Powder) was given. After midnight, the pain reduced by half, and sweating stopped shortly thereafter. On the next day, the rapid pulse slightly receded, but the lower abdomen was hard as stone and painful upon palpation. The previous medicine was administered again. That night, the Huan Tiao acupoint also became painful, extending down to the knee, while the lower abdomen softened slightly. Urination remained painful, and defecation was not yet smooth. The same prescription was continued, adding two large Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), E Zhu (Curcumae Rhizoma), Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces), and Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) to each dose. After smooth defecation, fever subsided, pain ceased, urine volume increased, and all symptoms resolved.
The mother of Tai Xue Heng Yu's nephew suffered from spasmodic swelling and pain in the tendons of the right shoulder during mid-spring, worse at night. The next day, pain extended to below the scapula, involved the Qu Chi acupoint, and was accompanied by chills and fever resembling shivering. Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) was modified with Nan Xing (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum), Jiu Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine), Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), and Wei Ling Xian (Spatholobi Caulis). By the Zi and Chou hours (11 PM - 3 AM), the illness halved, tendon spasms ceased, and redness and swelling slightly decreased. The next day, Nan Xing was removed, and Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) were added. Shoulder pain further decreased that night. However, due to sleeplessness, she experienced dry mouth and stiff tongue. A formula containing Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Wei Ling Xian (Spatholobi Caulis), Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), Jiu Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine), and Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) was used. Fever completely subsided, pain disappeared, and appetite returned. Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) were used for final regulation, resulting in good health.
