Sun Xiyu suffered from swelling and pain in his limbs and joints, excessive phlegm, nausea, and vomiting. His chest felt obstructed with qi not flowing freely, and his speech was unclear and unsmooth. At night, he dreamed of being chased and accompanied by deceased persons or wild ghosts, leaving his spirit desolate and vile, filled with fear and unrest. He also sweated profusely without stopping, and his food intake decreased to two-thirds less than usual. Famous physicians from near and far treated him for over a month without effect, so they earnestly requested my treatment. Upon examining his pulse, the left hand pulse was very weak, due to excessive sweating. The right hand pulse was slippery and large, caused by phlegm-fluid retention, damp-heat, and dampness. The method should have been tonification and astringency. Previous doctors treated it as wind-pathogen and used dispersing methods, which drained his primordial spirit and risked causing Rou Zhi (a condition characterized by stiffness and spasms). I prescribed Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus). After taking this prescription, the profuse sweating was largely controlled, his mental clarity slightly improved, and vomiting stopped. However, he still had no appetite, and at night he continued to dream of wandering and acting wickedly with the dead. Therefore, I changed the formula to: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 1.5 qian; Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), and Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) each 1 qian; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 0.5 qian. Decocted with two cups of water and one heart blood of a male pig until reduced to 0.8 cup, and drunk. After four doses, he could sleep, began dreaming of living people, and no longer dreamed of the dead.
Ai Quan, in October of the previous year, contracted a common cold with cough, immediately followed by hoarseness. Later, upon hearing of his father's death, he suffered from excessive grief, resulting in an inability to lie on his right side while sleeping. Physicians treated him with formulas for nourishing yin and descending fire. For half a year, his muscles wasted significantly, his stool became loose, his food intake decreased, his cough and hoarseness worsened, and his throat became painful. He invited me to treat him. Examination revealed that all six pulses were wiry and rapid. This is a syndrome where sorrow injures the Lung and worry injures the Spleen, which is critically dangerous. I prescribed Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fen Cao (Licorice Root), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Jiu Chao Bai Shao Yao (Wine-fried Paeoniae Radix Alba), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), and Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), decocted and taken for one day. Then, I switched to Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba), Jie Geng (Platocodonis Radix), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Jiu Lian (Wine-processed Coptidis Rhizoma), Bian Dou (Vignae Seed), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), and Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis). After taking this, he could sleep on his right side. Finally, I prescribed Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) added with Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Wu Mei (Mume Fructus), He Zi (Chebulae Fructus), Jiu Lian (Wine-processed Coptidis Rhizoma), and Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus). He recovered after regulation.
