The wife of the Taixue (Imperial Academy Student) from Kunchi suffered from toothache. One night, she fainted three times. The next day, both cheeks became red and swollen, with unbearable pain, accompanied by aversion to cold and shivering, rendering her unable to sleep or eat. Qingwei Tang (Stomach-Clearing Decoction) was used with Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) as the sovereign drug, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) as the minister drug, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) as the assistant drug, and Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) as the guide drug. After ingestion, the pain was instantly relieved, as quickly as a lamp extinguished by wind. Externally, Mingfan (Alumen) was ground into powder. One large Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) was taken, filled with the alum powder until full, and roasted over charcoal fire until charred black. Once the alum turned into a red-brown dry powder, it was applied intermittently to the painful teeth, stopping the pain immediately. This prescription is highly effective.
A maid-servant suffered from uterine prolapse outside the body due to difficult labor, which had not retracted for half a month, making sitting and lying down difficult. Her family was too poor to afford medicine, and she feared it would become an intractable disease. A neighbor old woman consulted a specialist doctor on her behalf. Dr. Huang, a medical scholar, instructed her with four sentences: "This is an easy matter. You only need to administer Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Spleen-Boosting and Qi-Raising Decoction) for one hundred doses. Each dose must contain Renshen (Ginseng Radix) at 3 qian. A total of two jin of Ginseng will suffice to cure her." Upon hearing this, her husband stuck out his tongue in apology, saying, "Our family lives by daily wage labor, morning work and evening food, with no reserves for overnight storage. Our cooking pot has been covered in spiderwebs for more than half a month. How could we possibly have two jin of Ginseng to consume? We can only await our fate." The old woman then reported this to me, along with Dr. Huang's treatment plan. I smiled and said to the old woman, "If that is truly the case, poor families would simply wait for death; what use are doctors then? This condition must be caused by cold invasion during childbirth, leading to blood stasis that prevents retraction. Although the symptom is named 'Yin Tuo' (Yin Prolapse), it is not necessarily entirely due to Qi deficiency causing sinking. Her good appetite and normal bowel and bladder movements indicate otherwise. I have a method that is inexpensive and fast-acting, curing within three to five days. Use a piece of unwatered Duan Shi (Calcined Limestone), weighing about two to three jin. Boil two to three jin of Jiucai (Allium tuberosum) in water and place the decoction in a basin. Throw the dry lime into the boiling liquid. When the bubbling sound ceases, filter out the lime residue. Sit on the edge of the basin while it is still hot. First fumigate, then wash. Immediately afterwards, rub and massage the affected area with hot Jiucai. Lime can dispel cold and resolve blood stasis, while Jiucai promotes Qi circulation and resolves stasis. Wash once a day according to this method. Initially, it felt extremely refreshing. After three days of washing, the uterus indeed softened and retracted inside. This was my speculative prescription; I did not expect such rapid results initially. People in the village heard of this and suggested naming this prescription 'Sai Bai Tie Renshen Tang' (Decoction Surpassing Hundred Doses of Ginseng)."
