Hot tears flow continuously without a specific time pattern. The harm is subtle and hidden. This is a latent hazard within the depletion of essence, representing an excess of deficiency (deficiency with empty heat). Taking cold-natured drugs damages fluids and blood; taking hot-natured drugs causes blood stagnation and difficulty in circulation. One should seek the therapeutic principle from medical theory, ensuring that tonification is appropriate and pathogenic factors are eliminated.
This condition refers to eyes having no other diseases, characterized only by the continuous flow of hot tears at all times. If hot tears occur alongside other eye diseases, it is caused by fire agitating water, which is not comparable to this disease. It is due to the depletion of liver, gallbladder, and kidney water, leading to deficiency and astringency of yin essence, combined with excessive mental exertion, over-anxiety, and deep thinking, which stir up internal fire and damage fluids. Therefore, when the ocular humors (lubricating substances) are insufficient, and injury occurs from excessive weeping, people often suffer from this. If left untreated for a long time and if taboos are violated, it may transform into internal cataract (Neizhang). Because the pathology is mild and slow, many suffer from its consequences. It is suitable to take:
Danggui Yin Zi (Angelica Decoction)
Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Root), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 1 qian), Huashi (Talcum) (0.5 qian).
The above herbs are cut into pieces. Add two zhong of water and three slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until eight parts remain. Remove the dregs and take warm.
Jiao Wan (Pepper Pill) (for treating dim vision and excessive tearing)
Shudihuang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae, sliced and dried by baking), Chuanjiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli, remove seeds and closed-mouth ones, lightly stir-fried), Shengdihuang (Raw Radix Rehmanniae, sliced and dried by baking).
Take equal parts of these three herbs, grind into fine powder, and make pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take fifty pills per dose, administered on an empty stomach with salted rice water.
(The Fu family of Jiangling was poor and made a living selling paper. They liked to host traveling scholars. One day, a guest wearing a square cap and cloth robe invited Mr. Fu to drink. Mr. Fu suffered from dim vision and excessive tearing at the time. The guest taught him this prescription. After taking it for less than a month, his eyes could see objects at night. He lived to be eighty or ninety years old, remaining sharp-minded and clear-hearing.)
Zhu Danxi said that Fengyan (wind-affected eyelid margin) involves the eye system, where accumulated heat exists in the upper diaphragm, formed by diet combined with anger. Stubborn phlegm obstructs the chest and diaphragm, preventing turbid qi from descending and clear qi from ascending. Consequently, fire becomes more intense while water descends further. Over time, the eyelid margins swell due to pus exudation, and tiny worm-like filaments grow inside, resulting in chronic non-healing conditions accompanied by itching. Use Zijin Gao (Purple Gold Ointment); scrape off the grease with the tip of a silver hairpin and apply it to the affected area. If there is indeed itching, one must also eliminate parasites to eradicate the root cause. Since Zijin Gao only removes dampness, wind, and cools the blood, if the condition is as previously described—phlegm formed by diet and anger—one must additionally use Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Bupleurum Powder to Circulate the Extremities). Remove Xiebai (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata? Note: Context implies Mangxiao/Radix Salinae and Dahuang/Radix et Rhizoma Rhei based on standard formula composition, but text says "Xiao Huang" likely referring to Mangxiao and Dahuang) and Huang, grind into fine powder, mix evenly with wine, dry, and take according to the method. Prohibit consumption of rich flavors and strong spices. This is the key to mastering various treatments.
