Human life possesses the joy of nature, the joy of status, and the joy of physical health. The joy of nature is like spring in all four seasons, with all things sharing one body. Although the dwelling may be desolate and sparse, joy remains. Although the five senses may be incomplete, joy remains. Although residing among barbarians or facing disasters, joy remains. In the streams, mountains, wind, and moon, as long as I am present, I am the master; regarding trees, stones, birds, and fish, treating them as close friends is sufficient. Why indulge in sexual passions on the pillow and bed, indulging in licentiousness? Even the Creator cannot exert his manipulations. As for the joy of status and the joy of longevity and health, only those with abundant fortune can possess both. Generally, attaining nobility and attaining longevity seem to have separate origins. Youthful simplicity without fading is the foundation of longevity, yet people dislike its lack of conspicuous brilliance; childhood agility and flowing spirit are signs of nobility, yet people dislike its excessive simplicity and lack of refinement. This lies halfway between heaven and human effort. The work of后天 (post-heaven) cultivation requires untold caution before one can condense auspiciousness and prolong life. Therefore, after achieving success, knowing that this body is entrusted by Heaven, one should preserve essence and conserve spirit to repay Heaven's favor. If one fills the bed with female love and exhausts male pleasure, depleting one's inherent essence and relying on medicinal herbs, seeking immediate effects, it allows ignorant villains to secretly employ methods of harming people to gain quick profits. Although past dynasties have seen such ruins, the current era is even more severe. Currently, the image of peace has turned into busyness, and the world's fortune has shifted towards fire (heat). Adding impetuous medicines to this, how can death not follow closely? This principle was explained in detail by Qibo and Huangdi, but officials are unwilling to investigate carefully. The classic states: "In the way of Yin and Yang, when Yang is secret/firm, it becomes solid. If the two do not harmonize, it is like having Spring without Autumn, or Winter without Summer." Therefore, following this is called the standard of the Sage. This passage was buried by previous annotations, failing to realize it explicitly states the Sage's method of intercourse: merely ensuring Yang remains secret and firm so it does not leak. However, Yin and Yang must harmonize. Having Spring without Autumn means no Yin; having Winter without Summer means no Yang. Thus, the Sage only adjusts imbalance to return to harmony, which is merely the method of intercourse. The Sage holds the Great Harmony Primordial Qi, grasping vitality naturally. Observing tuning zithers and playing lutes, even the temperament of women in the inner chambers can harmonize, let alone one's own blood and qi. Through ritual and music education, benevolence and righteousness gradually influence, even if the prosperity of people and things can be achieved effortlessly, how much more so for one's own offspring? Therefore, anyone planning to expand their lineage should use medicine with the standard of purity to summon harmony, avoiding eclectic harshness that causes deviation. Furthermore, the phrase "Yin Ping Yang Mi" (Yin balanced, Yang secret/firm) further elucidates this meaning. When Yin is balanced without excess or deficiency, Yang can remain secret and firm without leaking. This shows that the secrecy of Yang is the primary concern in sacred intercourse. To achieve the secrecy of Yang, power must be given to Yin, precisely because Yang roots in Yin; cultivating Yin is cultivating the foundation of Yang. Today's people use harsh and fierce medicines to rob away Yin, thinking they are nourishing Yang. Coupled with heavy consumption in the bedroom, this gradually leads to bone marrow depletion, flesh wasting, mental confusion, qi loss, hair withering, and premature aging, yet they do not realize they were misled by medicine. How sorrowful! I once saw a Zhejiang doctor surnamed Song who made large pills in the capital, distributing them to officials under the name of umbilical cord and fetal hair, but actually containing refined sulfur. It caused sudden and pleasant erection, but soon numerous dryness diseases emerged. Many elders in my hometown suffered from this, clearly identifiable. Recently traveling in Lucheng, I heard that Xiaojuan Zhang Hongyi damaged his brain by taking Red Lead (Hongqian), resulting in continuous nocturnal emission day and night. The brain is the Sea of Marrow; brain heat causes all marrow in the body to rush out. Ultimately, heat remains while marrow is exhausted, leading to bone weakness and difficulty walking. At the old residence of Mr. Lou Guotianru, I saw turbid nasal discharge dripping on wooden panels, deep yellow in color, penetrating the wood, impossible to scrub off. Inquiry revealed it was caused by taking seed-enlarging hot medicines. Later, due to a minor cold, he died. Alas! Brain heat is extreme, steaming mucus into yellow; the heat exiting the nose penetrates wood, yet he did not awaken until heat generated wind, still treating the exterior rather than the interior. What more can be said? Mr. Liu Shilu from my hometown developed Xike (wasting-thirst disease) from taking hot medicines. Doctor Deng Jucun insisted he take Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction) for a thousand doses, which proved effective. This followed the principle of "strengthening the master of Water to control the brightness of Fire." Yuan Tiren's empirical formula for seeds from Gaoyou used medicines balancing both Yin and Yang, deriving from the principle of "Yin Ping Yang Mi." This elder was skilled in medicine and prudent with drugs, so I commend him. Another alchemist took water from black lead, calling it Shen Shui Jin Dan (Divine Water Golden Pill) to deceive people. For phlegm-fire diseases, initially experiencing its downward force feels slightly refreshing, but one does not know lead is extremely drying, causing further Yin robbery, resulting in greater harm. There is also the method of steaming the navel, named Peng Zu's Life-Extending Method. The navel is the root of life. Using large hot, qi-scattering drugs like Musk, Sulfur, and Aconite, plus moxa fire to steam and burn, fortunately, if true Qi is not disturbed, there is little harm. If steaming agitates true Qi, causing it to scatter and not gather, creating chaos and unrest, it leads to rapid death. I heard Old Doctor Mu Yungu from Lou often taught: Steaming the navel method has damage but no benefit, absolutely不可行 (not feasible). Profound words! I also commend this. Mr. Hu Youchen said: There are five reasons for difficult conception. 1. Personality is harsh and critical, liking to expose others' secrets. 2. Obsessed with cleanliness, finding many things unsuitable. 3. Stingy, holding money tightly without letting a thread leak. 4. Preferring young male prostitutes, using them improperly, injuring liver tendons. 5. Taking too many hot medicines, scorching true Yin until exhausted. Jiayan (Yu Chang's courtesy name) believes this discussion thoroughly expounds the classic principles, refuting alchemists' fallacies and breaking the confusion of the credulous. It is truly a medicine for saving the world.
