<Pi> masses (masses formed by stagnation of qi and blood) are often caused by irregular diet in infants, leading to obstruction of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner, a concept referring to the upper, middle, and lower sections of the torso and their functions), resulting in food stagnation in the intestines and stomach that cannot be dispersed and unblocked. Initially, it is called "Ji" (accumulation). Over time, qi and blood become entangled with phlegm and accumulate, blocking the abdomen and hypochondrium. Additionally, patients with malaria who indulge in cold raw foods and drinks can also develop this condition. Its symptoms include paroxysmal pain, sallow complexion, emaciation, fatigue, or tidal fever and alternating chills and heat. Treatment should first eliminate chills and heat, then use formulas that dissolve hardness and dissipate nodules, harmonize the spleen, and benefit the stomach. Combined with moxibustion and external applications, efficacy will naturally be achieved over time.
One discussion on pediatric abdominal Pi masses mentions symptoms such as fever, aversion to cold, dry mouth, reddish urine, loose stools, abdominal distension and swelling, cough with phlegm, asthma, fever, anorexia, sallow complexion, emaciation, and limb fatigue.

Another discussion on pediatric Pi accumulation states that if the condition persists for a long time without resolving, primordial qi becomes weak, the spleen and stomach are damaged, muscles waste away, the abdomen enlarges with visible blue veins, fever and dry mouth occur, and abdominal distension is present.

First, put the herbs in oil and fry until yellow. Filter out the dregs and mash them for later use. When the oil cools, add Huang Dan. Simmer using alternating gentle and strong fire, stirring constantly with locust or willow branches until black smoke appears. Test by dropping oil into water; when it forms beads and has the right consistency when touched, remove from fire. Then add five fine medicines (Zhen A Wei, Ru Xiang, Mo Yao, She Xiang, Xiao Xiao) and the mashed coarse dregs. Mix well. Store in a porcelain vessel. To use, melt it sitting in water; do not melt directly over fire. If there are scrofula ulcers, add one liang of Hu Po (Amber); it will surely be effective.

Grind all into fine powder. First, boil breast milk in a copper spoon over charcoal fire until yellow. Add the above medicines, quickly remove, and stir evenly. Spread on oiled paper and form pills the size of rice grains. For males, apply to the left eye; for females, to the right eye. Before sleep, place one pill in the outer canthus. Close eyes and let it dissolve naturally. Sweating starts from head to chest with the first pill, reaches the navel with the second, and below the navel with the third. Apply two or three more pills; abdominal pain followed by discharge of pus and blood indicates self-healing. Miraculous.

Remove after one shichen (two hours). The Pi mass will turn into pus and blood and discharge completely. Recover by taking medicines to regulate the spleen and stomach.
One discussion on pediatric Pi disease persisting for years without cure: Various physicians used attacking and draining remedies repeatedly without success, leading to depletion of primordial qi, damage to the spleen and stomach, dryness of blood and qi, emaciation, sallow complexion, enlarged abdomen with visible blue veins, fever with spontaneous sweating, rapid breathing, diarrhea, abdominal distension, edema, and anorexia. Finally, recovered by long-term use of Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
