I possess a small pellet of spiritual elixir, capable of curing the delusion diseases of all beings in the four seas. Swallowing just a little brings physical peace and safety, guaranteeing extended longevity and renewed life. Who knows the mind-calming method? It uses this formless, wondrous medicine to heal. Healing this heart ensures one does not fall ill, as if turning over and leaping into the Great Void (Tai Xu). Cluttered thoughts arise from karmic obstacles; how chaotic and disturbing they are! To exorcise these demons, there exists a profound secret: guide them into the peaceful abode of Emperor Yao. A person manifests thoughts only when harboring dualistic minds; a human being is defined when thoughts are undivided and pure. When the human heart is undivided and devoid of thoughts, and thoughts cease, one leisurely perceives the Supreme Clarity. This ends, that ends; amidst the commotion, distinctions become clear. As clouds part, ten thousand miles reveal clear light; a single bright moon shines round and white. Roaming the four seas, nourishing the Noble Spirit (Haoran Zhi Qi), the heart connects to blue water, and water connects to the sky. At the ferry crossing, the fisherman's questions remain; within the cave, peach blossoms stay fresh daily.
The *Xingli* states: The human heart is like a bright mirror. The Sage merely prevents it from gathering dust. The human heart is like still water; the Sage merely prevents it from rippling. Zhu Xi also said: Students must constantly awaken this mind, keeping it alert and unobscured, like the sun at its zenith, so that all evils naturally subside. The principle is the same.
The Heart (Xin) is the source of all methods, the master of the body, the root of life and death, the origin of good and evil. It can communicate with Heaven and Earth, serves as the ruler of spiritual intelligence, and determines whether illness occurs. Generally, when a single thought stirs within, the Six Consciousnesses (Liu Shi) circulate externally. If one does not turn toward goodness, the Five Viscera (Wu Zang) will be inverted, and major illnesses will afflict the body. However, the enlightened do not act thus; with true clarity and purity, all disasters are eliminated. Laozi said: Human spirit loves clarity but is disturbed by people; the human heart loves tranquility but is pulled by desires. If one can frequently dispel desires, the heart becomes tranquil naturally; if one clarifies the heart, the spirit becomes pure naturally. Thus, the Six Desires (Liu Yu) do not arise, and the Three Poisons (San Du) are extinguished. Mencius said: There is no better way to nourish the heart than to reduce desires. Therefore, delusional thinking is a disease that even immortals cannot cure. One who rectifies the mind is feared even by ghosts and spirits, due to the difference between nourishing and not nourishing [the heart]. Let the eyes not look wantonly, let the ears not listen wantonly, let the mouth not speak wantonly, let the heart not move wantonly. Greed, anger, ignorance, and love; right and wrong, self and others—all should be let go. Before an event occurs, do not anticipate it prematurely; when an event occurs, do not disturb it excessively; after an event has passed, do not cling to it. Allow things to come naturally, respond with naturalness, trust that they will depart on their own. Anger, fear, joy, and worry should all find their proper place. This is the method of nourishing the heart.
