Whenever any disease is about to heal, the defensive Qi (Wei Qi) on the exterior and the blood and Qi internally are depleted outwardly, while the essence, Qi, and spirit of the Zang-Fu organs are damaged inwardly. The physical form becomes weak, fatigue and lack of strength ensue; this is the normal state. It is advisable to maintain peace of mind and rest quietly, with harmonizing the Spleen and Stomach as the priority. One must guard against wind-cold, be cautious in daily living, abstain from excessive thinking and anger, regulate diet, avoid sexual exertion, eliminate delusional thoughts; these are the crucial essentials. If violated, even a skilled physician will find it difficult to achieve success. Do not treat life and death lightly like mayflies, or harm your body like a moth flying into flames! Be vigilant, be vigilant. The examples follow below.
Upon initial recovery, one must ensure that clothing and bedding are appropriate for the temperature. If too hot, it causes thirst and mental restlessness, exacerbating deficient heat; if too cold, it allows external pathogens to re-enter the interior.
After contracting Cold Damage (Shanghan) or epidemic diseases, when the body is cool and the pulse is slow, it is suitable to consume vegetable soup to unblock residual pathogens. If one feels abdominal comfort and ease, then consume clear broth from aged stored rice to awaken the grain Qi in the Stomach. After one or two days, one may consume a small amount of porridge, three to four times a day, or four to six times, being careful not to overeat. Alternatively, use aged fermented soybeans (Chen Dou Chi), or consume refreshing foods, or boil white dried fish (Bai Xiang) in clear water, dipping it in vinegar is excellent. Gradually advance to live crucian carp soup for conditioning over one hundred days, so as to prevent symptoms such as food relapse (Shi Fu) and labor relapse (Lao Fu).
If fever recurs after eating, fasting from grains should lead to recovery. Take formulas that regulate the Spleen and Stomach. Do not use sudden tonification or hot medicines. Treatment must be gradual to achieve complete success.
In cases of severe pain, avoid pig fat, wet noodles, chicken, mutton, greasy and sticky foods, and fried or roasted items. Violating this leads to recurrence and is difficult to treat.
After stroke (Zhong Feng), avoid pungent, dispersing, aromatic, and drying medicines, as well as pork, mutton, goose, chicken, fishy odors, buckwheat noodles, eggs, and other substances that obstruct Qi and trigger disease.
Sexual exertion is strictly contraindicated after illness. Violating this can cause the tongue to protrude several inches, leading to death.
For labor-induced cough with fever, edema, and rapid breathing, a bland diet is recommended, avoiding salted foods.
After malaria and dysentery, avoid overeating, as well as sweet, slippery, blood-derived foods, raw/cold foods, pears, melons, and similar items.
For carbuncles and ulcers on the back (Yong Ju Fa Bei), the dietary taboos are the same as those for Cold Damage.
For deficiency damage with wheezing, coughing, and bone-steaming fever (Gu Zheng), avoid large-dose hot and warming tonics. It is suitable to take Yin-nourishing medicines to cultivate the True Yuan (True Origin), which may be effective.
Postpartum, cold and cooling foods are strictly prohibited. Even on scorching summer days, they are unsuitable. Many people mistakenly use them, causing harm to life; this is specifically highlighted here.
After smallpox/rash diseases, improper care often leads to critical danger due to neglect in protection.
Generally, after an illness, it is like a mud wall soaked in water; after it dries, it fears repeated impact. Repeated violation cannot be saved. Below are dietary treatment formulas provided to assist those who preserve their health, and to benefit those who fear taking medicine, facilitating elder care and nurturing the young.
