When the infant has just been born from the mother's womb, it should be lifted immediately. It should then be wrapped in cotton wadding and held in an adult's embrace for warmth. Even in midsummer, the cotton wadding must not be removed abruptly; it should be gradually reduced. This is because the infant has just left the womb and must not be exposed to cold. Furthermore, one should quickly wrap a finger in cotton wadding to wipe clean the blood and filth around the infant's mouth, eyes, and surrounding areas, ensuring nothing enters the mouth or eyes. If lifting is delayed or wrapping is neglected, the infant will suffer from cold. If filth enters the mouth or eyes, the infant will fall ill. (The symptoms and formulas are discussed later.)
If the infant cries late after birth, gently whip its back with green onion white parts and call out the father's childhood name; the infant will then cry. Additionally, if the infant is born with weak breath, on the verge of death, and unable to cry, it is likely due to difficult labor or exposure to cold. Immediately wrap the infant in cotton wadding and place it in an adult's embrace for warmth. If already wrapped, add more wadding to ensure extreme warmth. Before cutting the umbilical cord, burn the placenta over hot ashes. Simultaneously, twist thick paper into a roll, dip it in oil, ignite it, and pass it repeatedly along the umbilical cord to scorch it. This is done because the umbilical cord connects to the navel, allowing the heat energy to enter the abdomen through the navel. Then, wash and rub the umbilical cord with hot vinegar water. Within a short time, the breath will return and the infant will cry. Afterward, bathe and cut the cord as usual. This method is very effective and has saved many infants.
After birth, the infant must be bathed first to cleanse impurities before the umbilical cord can be cut. If the cord is cut first, bathwater entering the navel may cause conditions such as omphalitis. The bathwater must be prepared by decocting herbs in advance, stored in a bottle, and warmed temporarily when needed. Avoid using raw water. Subsequent baths should also use herbal decoctions. The following herbs are listed for preparing the decoction:
Bathing the infant with pig bile solution prevents sores and tinea, making the skin smooth and lustrous. Decocting *Aurum* (Gold), *Os Tigris* (Tiger Bone), and *Cinnabaris* (Cinnabar) repels evil influences and alleviates fright. (Using *Os Tigris* alone is also effective). Decocting half a *sheng* of plum leaves resolves muscle heat and reduces warm-feverish conditions. Decocting two *liang* of *Radix Angelicae Dahuricae* (Baizhi) and three *liang* of *Radix Sophorae Flavescentis* (Kushen) removes various wind pathogens. Decocting *Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati* (Shuodao), green onion white parts, *Semen Sesami Nigrum* (Huma), *Radix Angelicae Dahuricae* (Baizhi), [missing character], and *Semen Cnidii* (Shechuangzi) reduces fever.
Decocting *Radix Sophorae Flavescentis* (Kushen), *Rhizoma Coptidis* (Huanglian), pig bile, *Rhizoma Bletillae* (Baiji), *Cupressi Cacumen* (Shanye), *Platycladi Cacumen* (Baiye), and *Aceris Folium* (Fengye) dispels wind.
Decocting *Semen Cannabis* (Damaoren), *Lingering Fragrance* (Linglingxiang), *Eugeniae Flos* (Dingxiang), *Mori Fructus* (Sangshen), and [missing character] treats various sores.
Decocting *Aurum* (Gold), *Ramulus Pruni Persicae* (Taonuo), *Realgar* (Xionghuang), and *Cinnabaris* (Cinnabar) repels evil and eliminates fright.
Decocting *Leonuri Herba* (Yimucao) treats tinea and various sores.
For all decoctions, use one *dou* of water per batch, boil down to seven *sheng*, filter out the dregs, and adjust to a suitable temperature for use. In winter, do not make it too hot; in summer, do not let it be cold. Adjustments must be appropriate for use.
After birth, the infant must be bathed according to schedule to remove dirt, but not too frequently. If never bathed, the skin will wrinkle, hair will fall out, and sores and tinea will multiply. When bathing, use slightly less water on the back, while other areas can be washed freely. Do not spray the back violently, nor let the infant sit in water for too long, as this may induce fright and illness. Caution is essential. Consistent adherence to these methods ensures the infant's body remains smooth and comfortable, blood vessels flow smoothly, and the child suffers fewer illnesses as they grow, which has proven effective without exception.
