Alternating cold and heat, excessive sleepiness with coarse breathing, yellowish-white stools, vomiting, indigestion of milk and food, occasional coughing, along with syndromes involving the five zang organs. One should decoct the Jun-Chen herbs for entering the zang organs, dissolve Daqing Gao (Great Blue Paste), and subsequently administer Yihuang San (Yellow-Enhancing Powder). If purgatives have been used previously, or if there are no indications for purgation, one must strictly avoid using purgative methods. This is due to Cold invading the Spleen and Lung, leading to an inability to transform and transport food.
Excessive sleepiness, ability to suckle, incessant drinking, expectoration of phlegm, and yellow watery stools indicate a syndrome of Stomach Deficiency Heat, thirst, vomiting, and diarrhea. One should generate fluids in the Stomach to quench thirst, and after thirst is quenched, use diaphoretic herbs to release the exterior. For quenching thirst, Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is taken frequently. For releasing the exterior, Daqing Gao (Great Blue Paste) is the primary treatment.
Vomiting froth, passing green or white loose stools, chest oppression with restlessness but no thirst, hiccupping (Geng Qi), frequent sighing, and sleeping with eyes partially open indicate Wind-Cold that has lingered, causing physical weakness and resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. One should tonify the Spleen first, then release the exterior. To tonify the Spleen, use Yihuang San (Yellow-Enhancing Powder); to release the exterior, use Daqing Gao (Great Blue Paste). These two syndromes commonly occur in spring and winter.
Tidal fever refers to intermittent fever that subsides after a period and recurs at the same time the next day; this suggests impending convulsions (Jing Feng). Vigorous fever refers to continuous high fever without cessation, which may severe enough to trigger epilepsy (Jing Xian). Wind-Heat is characterized by body heat, hot breath from the mouth, and signs of Wind. Warm-Vigorous (Wen Zhuang) refers to a sensation of warmth without high fever.
After suffering from vomiting and diarrhea or a major illness, if the child can make sounds but cannot speak, yet can still swallow medicine, this is not aphonia (Shi Yin). It is due to Kidney Qi deficiency, failing to connect upwards with Yang Qi. One should tonify the Kidney using Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill). Aphonia is caused by sudden onset of disease.
Jaundice (Huang Bing) is indicated when the skin and eyes are yellow. Body pain, stiffness in the shoulders and back, difficult urination and defecation, generalized yellowing of the body, face, fingers, and nails, with a color resembling house dust, and visual disturbances where everything appears yellow, accompanied by thirst, indicates a difficult-to-treat case of Jaundice (Huang Dan). These two conditions often follow major illnesses. Another condition, not following an illness, involves slight yellowing of the body, indicating Stomach Heat, which also applies to adults. Yellow complexion, abdominal distension, geophagia (eating earth), and thirst indicate Pi Gan (Spleen Malnutrition). Yellowing present since birth indicates Tai Dan (Fetal Jaundice). Ancient texts state: all types of jaundice are Heat syndromes, characterized by deep yellow color; if the color is pale yellow mixed with white, it indicates Stomach Qi deficiency and disharmony.
