The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: For newborn infants without disease, one must be cautious and not perform acupuncture or moxibustion preemptively. If preemptive acupuncture or moxibustion is performed, it causes the infant to endure pain and disturbs the five meridians, potentially leading to epilepsy. The regions of Heluo and Guanzhong have cold land and climate; infants there are prone to spasms. Therefore, three days after birth, moxibustion is often performed preemptively for prevention. Additionally, moxibustion on the cheek is used to prevent trismus (lockjaw). When trismus occurs, the vessels under the tongue are tense, and the tendons of the mandible are tight. Due to the cold climate in these areas, blood is let from under the tongue, and moxibustion is applied to the cheeks to prevent trismus. In the Wu and Shu regions, the climate is warm, and this disease does not occur. Although ancient prescriptions have been transmitted, modern practitioners fail to understand the differences between northern and southern regions and apply them blindly, thereby often harming infants. Thus, rural children who are allowed to grow naturally generally thrive without premature death or violent demise. When infants cry with fright, twitch their limbs during sleep, or undergo "bianzheng" (a physiological developmental process in infancy), one must be cautious not to use acupuncture or scratch the nails, as this may disturb the hundred meridians and induce epilepsy due to fright. Only in cases of Yin epilepsy, trismus, and spasms should acupuncture or nail scratching be performed. Generally, when treating epilepsy with moxibustion, one should first allow the infant to empty the bowels to create a state of deficiency, then apply moxibustion while the body is deficient. If moxibustion is applied when there is excess pathogenic qi that has not been purged, the qi becomes obstructed, blocking the front and back, which can be fatal. Epilepsy occurring at dawn (Pingdan) involves the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian; occurring in the morning involves the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian; occurring at noon involves the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian; occurring at dusk involves the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian; occurring at nightfall (Rending) involves the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian; occurring at midnight involves the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. These indicate the meridian where the pathology resides based on the time of onset. Observe the timing of the attack and moxa the corresponding meridians.
Furthermore, epilepsy is categorized into Five Zang Epilepsy and Six Livestock Epilepsy. It may manifest in the limbs or within the abdomen. Carefully examine the signs and moxa according to the location of the disease. Even if mild, it will heal. If the key principles are missed, harm will result.
*Moxibustion Methods for Five Zang Epilepsy from Qianjin Fang*:

Chicken Epilepsy: Moxa three cones each on all Yang meridians of the foot. (*Taiping Shenghui Fang* moxae Hand Shaoyin meridian three cones, located in the depression half cun distal to the wrist on the Yin aspect.) These are the methods for moxaing Six Livestock Epilepsy.
*Moxibustion Methods for Sudden Epilepsy from Qianjin Fang*:
For sudden infantile epilepsy, moxa both nipples; for female infants, moxa two fen below the nipple. To treat sudden infantile epilepsy characterized by a rigid body like a corpse and borborygmi in the abdomen: Moxa Taicang (Zhongwan, CV12) and points one cun above and below Shenque (CV8) on both sides, totaling six locations. Also, measure the abdomen using a string: wrap the string from the head down to the umbilicus, cut it, then turn the string towards the back along the spine to the end of the string. Moxa five cones one cun lateral to this point on both sides. If the face is pale and the cry voice remains unchanged, moxa the Foot Yangming and Foot Taiyin meridians. These are the methods for moxaing sudden epilepsy.
*Moxibustion Methods for Head Epilepsy from Qianjin Fang*:
If the eyes roll upward and the pupils move, moxa the center of the fontanelle. The method for locating it: Measure horizontally across the mouth from corner to corner, and horizontally across the nose from side to side. Remove half the width of the nose, combine with the mouth width as the standard measure. From the hairline on the forehead, measure upwards. Moxa one cone at the end of the measurement, exactly in the middle of the unossified fontanelle bone; the spot that moves with the hand is correct, which is the most critical point. Next, moxa approximately two fen entering the hairline on the forehead, aligned straight with the nose. (*Yingru Fang* states: Next moxa five cones at the hairline on the forehead, without specifying entering two fen.) Next, moxa both sides, approximately two fen entering the hairline directly above the pupil centers. (*Yingru Fang* is similar, stating only entering the hairline directly above, without specifying two fen.) Next, moxa the center of the whorl of hair on the crown. Next, moxa Kechuzhuren (Shangguan, GB7), located at the arterial pulse behind the eyebrows. (*Yingru Fang* states: Kechuzhuren is at the arterial pulse behind the eyebrow hairline.) Next, moxa Ermen (TE21) on both ears, located in the depression when the jaw opens. Next, moxa above both ears, taking the point by rolling up the ear, located at the top of the rolled ear. Another method: For adults, place three fingers horizontally above the ear; for children, use their own fingers. Next, moxa the blue veins above Wanggu (GB12) behind both ears; these can also be pricked with a needle to bleed. (*Yingru Fang* adds: Next moxa Renzhong (GV26) near the nose. Also: Next moxa Chengjiang (CV24). Next moxa Yuzhen (GV17), which is on the high bone of the neck.) Next, moxa Yuzhen (GV17). Next, moxa Fengchi (GB20) on both sides, located in the depression outside the large tendons at the back of the neck and hairline. Next, moxa Fengfu (GV16), located at the central hairline of the neck, which can be level with the three points of Fengchi. Next, moxa the two corners of the head, which are the raised bones on both sides of the hair whorl. (*Yingru Fang* mentions Taiji point here, which can be moxaed at the inner ends of the eyebrows.) There are nineteen points on the head in total (*Yingru Fang* lists twenty-three). Infants ten days old can receive three cones; thirty days old, five cones; fifty days old, seven cones. For severe cases, moxa all points; for mild cases, only moxa Xizhong (fontanelle), Fengchi (GB20), and Yuzhen (GV17). Use well-aged mugwort; ensure the moxa cone is flat and makes full contact with the skin so the heat reaches the pathology. Fresh mugwort or uneven cones that do not touch the skin render many cones useless. (*Yingru Fang* states: Excluding the head, there are twenty-three points. Do not moxa all at once; wait until other points are ineffective before proceeding sequentially. For mild cases, Xizhong, Ezhong (forehead), Fazhi (hairline), Birenzhong (nose philtrum), Ermen (ear gate), Fengchi (GB20), and Yuzhen (GV17) suffice. For head wind, adults rarely exceed thirty cones. This condition is deep-seated and should not be moxaed all at once; daily moxibustion is better. Also moxa fourteen cones on each corner of the mouth.)
*Moxibustion Methods for Abdominal Epilepsy from Qianjin Fang*:
If there is abdominal fullness, shortness of breath, and borborygmi, moxa Feimu (Lung Mu point), located in the depression of the second intercostal space above both nipples, measured by suspending a string aligned with the pupil. Next, moxa Danzhong (CV17); next, moxa Xiong tang; next, moxa Shenque (CV8) in the umbilicus. (*Yingru Fang* adds "one hundred cones" after Shenque.) Next, moxa Bixi, located in the depression of the first intercostal space below both nipples; next, moxa Juque (CV14). For adults, it is one cun below Jiwei (CV15); for infants, calculate six fen from the umbilicus, which corresponds to one cun below Jiwei, moxaing both sides. (*Yingru Fang* notes: Jiwei is five fen below the xiphoid process.) Next, moxa Weiguan (Zhongwan, CV12); next, moxa Jinmen, located posterior to the scrotum anterior to the anus, in the center. Measure from below the scrotum to the midpoint anterior to the anus. There are twelve points on the abdomen (*Yingru Fang* lists fourteen). For Xiong tang, Juque, and Weiguan, infants ten days old can receive three cones; those over one month, five cones; the seam below the yin, three cones. Some say determine cones by age.
*Moxibustion Methods for Back Epilepsy from Qianjin Fang*:
If there is rigidity and opisthotonos of the spine, moxa Dazhui (GV14), and moxa all Zang-Shu points and the midline of the Du Meridian. Measure from Dazhui to the coccyx, bend at the curve, then measure again from Dazhui; the starting point of the measurement on the Du Meridian is the target. There are twelve points on the back. Infants ten days old can receive three cones; those over one month, five cones.
*Moxibustion Methods for Hand Epilepsy from Qianjin Fang*:
If there are convulsions and tremors of the hands and feet, moxa Chize (LU5). (*Yingru Fang* states: Arterial pulse in the middle of the elbow crease.) Next, moxa the Yangming meridian; next, moxa Shaoshang (LU11); next, moxa Laogong (PC8). (*Yingru Fang* states: Arterial pulse in the center of the palm.) Next, moxa Xin Zhu (Pericardium); next, moxa Hegu (LI4). (*Yingru Fang* states: Between the metacarpal bones of the thumb and index finger.) Next, moxa Sanjian (LI3). (*Yingru Fang* states: In the hollow medial to the base of the joint between the thumb and index finger.) Next, moxa the Shaoyang meridian. There are sixteen points on the right hand. The key ones are Yangming, Shaoshang, Xin Zhu, Chize, Hegu, and Shaoyang. The number of cones is as stated above.
*Moxibustion Methods for Foot Epilepsy from Qianjin Fang*:
Also moxa Futu (ST32). (*Yingru Fang* states: Six cun above the knee.) Next, moxa Sanli (ST36); next, moxa Feichang; next, moxa Luxi; next, moxa the Yangming meridian; next, moxa the Shaoyang meridian; next, moxa Ran gu (KI2). (*Yingru Fang* states: In the hollow below the anterior malleoli.) There are fourteen points on the foot, all important for moxibustion, with the number of cones as stated above. The Hand and Foot Yangming meridians correspond to four fingers' width; for all infantile convulsive epilepsy, these are moxaed. If wind pathology causes severe movement and convulsions of the hands and feet, moxa the tips of all ten fingers and the joints proximal to them. (*Yingru Fang* states: Do not moxa all points; wait until other points are ineffective. *Qianjin Yi Fang* states: Moxa the second vertebra and the lower coccyx, measuring with a string, folding it in half to find the spinal center. Total three points. Fold this string into three equal parts, arranging them like the character 'Chuan', with one angle controlling the center and moxaing the lower two angles. Moxa the two sides of the spine, totaling five points. Mark these five points with cinnabar, prescribing one hundred cones each, using a削行 (wooden ruler/measure) as a guide. *Yingru Fang* adds: Crying after moxibustication indicates mild epilepsy, easy to treat; no crying indicates severe epilepsy, difficult to treat. Infants getting epilepsy within ten days of birth can be moxaed, one cone. For the most critical cases, three to five cones.)
*Moxibustion Methods from Various Schools*:
*Waitai Mi Yao* citing *Jia Yi Jing*: Moxa Benshen (GB13), one and a half cun lateral to Qucha, at the hairline. Another view: Four fen entering the hairline directly above the ear, intersection of Foot Shaoyang and Yang Wei meridians, moxa five cones. Mainly treats dizziness and headache, neck stiffness, chest and hypochondriac pulling, inability to tilt the head, mania without foaming, infantile convulsive epilepsy.
*Waitai Mi Yao* citing *Jia Yi Jing*: Moxa Linqi (GB15), five fen entering the hairline directly above the eye in the depression, intersection of Shaoyang and Taiyang meridians, moxa three cones. Mainly treats cyanosis of the cheek, inability to look, drooling and tearing, headache around eyes and brows, infantile convulsive epilepsy with upward gaze.
*Waitai Mi Yao* citing *Jia Yi Jing*: Moxa Jinsuo (GV9), between the segments of the ninth vertebra, where Qi of the Du Meridian emerges, taken in flexion, moxa three cones. Mainly treats infantile convulsive epilepsy with spasms, manic running, spinal rigidity, upward deviation of the eyes.
*Taiping Shenghui Fang*: Moxa Changqiang (GV1) one point, below Yaoshu, in the depression at the tip of the sacrum. Moxa five cones. Mainly treats spinal rigidity, inability to bend or extend, mania, difficulty in urination and defecation, incontinence, chronic hemorrhoids, infantile convulsive epilepsy.
*Taiping Shenghui Fang*: Moxa Yuanyang Mai (Zi Mai) two points, the blue vein shaped like a chicken's foot inside the ear. Treats head wind, post-auricular pain, infantile convulsive epilepsy with spasms, vomiting, diarrhea, fright and loss of essence, blurred vision, ocular discharge and dreams. Moxa three cones, needle insert one fen.
*Taiping Shenghui Fang*: For infantile convulsive epilepsy, moxa Guilu (CV23) one cone, in the center of the upper lip mucosa, cone size like a wheat grain; cutting with a steel knife is better.
*Taiping Shenghui Fang*: Qin Chengzu treated infantile fetal epilepsy, milk epilepsy, convulsive epilepsy, spirit possession, and mania with various ineffective treatments by binding both thumbs together with soft silk rope and moxaing three cones. Place the cone covering half the nail and half the flesh, burning all four quadrants. If one quadrant is not burned, the disease will not cure. The efficacy is immeasurable. For all epilepsies, moxa one cone, size like a wheat grain.
*Yingru Fang*: Confirming epilepsy signs, urgently moxa the center of the hair whorl on the crown. If eyes are fixed, moxa one point at the hairline directly opposite each pupil, one point one cun below the heart in the depression, one point above the兑骨 (xiphoid/costal cartilage junction) on the spine, and one point on the large zygoma, moxaing fourteen cones each. More moxaing on the crown is beneficial. If epilepsy signs persist, moxa seven cones one cun inside both nipples, tested with great effect.
*Wan Quan Fang*: Infantile convulsive epilepsy begins with fright and crying, then manifests. Moxa three cones in the hair whorl on the crown and the blue collateral behind the ear, cone size like a wheat grain. (Another method: Moxa Guilu (CV23) in the center of the upper lip mucosa.)
Infantile wind epilepsy begins with curling fingers as if counting, then manifests. Moxa three cones in the depression at the hairline above the nasal bridge, cone size like a wheat grain.
Infantile food epilepsy begins with chills and shivering, then manifests. Moxa three cones five fen above Jiwei (CV15).
