Mr. Mao discusses the syndrome of heat diarrhea in children: slight fever throughout the body, thirst, and sudden watery diarrhea. This syndrome originally arises because children play in the wind or under the sun, or remove their quilts under the scorching sun, causing the five zang organs to be affected by deficient toxic heat. Suddenly drinking too much water leads to indigestion. Treatment involves administering Rushi San (Frankincense Powder) combined with Sansheng Wan (Three Sages Pill) (both formulas are found in the section on All Types of Diarrhea), along with Longxian Gao (Dragon Saliva Ointment) (found in the section on Heat and Thirst), which results in recovery.
*Yingtong Baojian* states that heat diarrhea in children is caused by heat affecting the spleen and stomach, thus preventing the proper transformation and transportation of the five grains.
*Yingru* records a formula for treating three-year-old children with heat excess but no abdominal distension, and continuous diarrhea.
*Mai Men Dong* (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 liang, heart removed) *Da Huang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen) *Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen, honey-fried) *Dang Gui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) *Chai Hu* (Bupleuri Radix) *Ren Shen* (Ginseng Radix) *Huang Qin* (Scutellariae Radix) (each 4 fen).
Add three sheng of water, boil down to one sheng and two he, divide into three doses. Stop administration once bowel movements become smooth.
Zhang Huan's Qingwei San (Clear Stomach Powder) treats diarrhea complicated by heat.
*Chuan Lian Zi* (Toosendan Fructus) *Huang Bo* (Phellodendri Cortex, lightly roasted, honey-fried) *Dang Gui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed, roasted dry) *Di Yu* (Sanguisorbae Radix, roasted) *Huang Lian* (Coptidis Rhizoma, whiskers removed, stir-fried) (each half liang).
Pulverize the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take one qian per dose, add eight fen of water, decoct until four fen remains, strain, and take warm before milk or food intake.
*Yingtong Baojian* records Sanshuang Wan (Three Frost Pills) for treating watery heat diarrhea in children.
*Pi Shuang* (Arsenic Trioxide, one qian bi) *Baicao Shuang* (Herbal Ash, two qian bi) *Badou Shuang* (Crotonis Fructus Frost, two qian bi).
Grind the above ingredients evenly, mix with melted wax to form pills as needed. Administer one pill with Duzhu Tang (Single Broom Decoction).
*Liu Shi Jia Chuan* records a formula for stopping continuous heat diarrhea in children.
*Mu Xiang* (Aucklandiae Radix) *Huang Lian* (Coptidis Rhizoma).
Grind equal parts into powder, mix with aged rice water to form pills the size of mung beans. Take three to five pills per dose, administered with aged rice water.
*Kong Shi Jia Chuan* records a Spleen-Cooling Formula for treating pediatric spleen heat, where diarrhea resembles yellow saliva or jujube flowers.
*Xiang Bai Zhi* (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) *Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each half liang).
Grind into a fine powder. Take one small qian per dose, add five fen of water, decoct until three fen remains, take warm, twice daily.
