The *Shenghui Fang* (Prescriptions of the Holy Wisdom) records: For infants and children whose variolae (smallpox/rubella) have not yet erupted, the Zicao Yinzi (Purple Gromwell Decoction) should be administered urgently.
Take two liang of Zicao (Arnebiae Radix seu Lithospermi Radix), finely chopped, and pour one large zhan of boiling water over it. Immediately cover with a vessel to prevent the aroma of Zicao from escaping. Based on the child's age, administer half he to one he of the warm liquid.
After taking this medicine, even if the lesions erupt, the condition will be mild. (All medical texts emphasize administering Zicao as the primary step.)
The *Shenghui Fang* treats infantile rubella and smallpox, aiming to facilitate rapid eruption. The Huxi Jiu (Coriander Wine) prescription is suitable. (This aligns with methods in *Zhen Dou Lun*, *Wan Quan Fang*, and Dong Ji’s approach.)
Take three liang of Huxi (Coriandri Fructus), finely cut, and boil in two large zhan of wine until bubbling. Pour the hot wine over the Huxi, immediately cover to retain the vapor, let cool, and strain off the dregs. Gently spray from the top of the head down onto the back along the spine, both legs, chest, and abdomen to ensure even coverage, avoiding the face. Qian Yi advocated using two zhan of fine wine, boiled for one or two cycles, then adding four liang of Huxi and boiling again. He also stated: Keeping Huxi constantly present around the patient can dispel sweat odor and accelerate the eruption of lesions. During the course of variolae, exposure to outsiders and foul substances is taboo. While wind and cold must be avoided, excessive bundling should also be prevented; clothing should be moderate, and the patient should sit and lie in a ventilated, cool place.
The *Shenghui Fang* addresses cases where heat-toxin lies latent in the internal organs of infants and children, prior to the manifestation of rubella or smallpox symptoms. Symptoms include slight heat in the four limbs, diminished appetite, dry and erect hair, and occasional slight fever on the forehead. The Shengyou (Raw Oil) prescription is indicated. This agrees with *Zhen Dou Lun* and *Wan Quan Fang*.
Take one small zhan of raw oil and one small zhan of lukewarm water. Slowly pour the lukewarm water into the oil while continuously stirring with a stick (*Zhen Dou Lun* specifies using a willow branch). Continue until all water is incorporated, stirring until the mixture becomes uniform like honey. Before going to bed at night: for infants under three years old (including those under 100 days and one year old), administer the amount contained in two clam shells per dose; for children aged five to seven, three clam shells per dose; for those under fifteen, three large clam shells to half a he per dose; for adults, one he to two he per dose. Adjust the dosage according to age and size. After administration, allow the child to rest lying down for a while. After three to five doses, bowel and bladder movements will become smooth, limb heat will subside, and variolae will not develop. *Wan Quan Fang* states: Bian Que argued that oil agents can be taken first to promote circulation; however, if limb heat is extreme or lesions have already erupted, oil should not be used. Instead, mild decoctions should be taken to regulate the Liver, resolve stagnant heat, and guard against excessive heat-toxin.
