**Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction)** from *Huoren Shu* (Book of Living People) is indicated for Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Wenbing (Warm Diseases) where sweating should have been induced but was not, resulting in internal blood stasis; as well as for cases of incomplete epistaxis or hematemesis with residual internal blood stasis, presenting with a sallow complexion and black stools. This formula primarily resolves internal blood stasis and also treats excessive eruption of chuangzhen (infectious exanthems), using this formula to resolve the condition.
Rhino horn (crushed into powder, 1 liang; if unavailable, use Shengma/Cimicifugae Rhizoma as a substitute)
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 0.5 jin)
Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 3 fen)
Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, heart removed, 1 liang)
Chop the herbs to the size of hemp seeds. For each dose, take 5 qianbi, add 1.5 zhan of water, and boil down to 1 zhan. If the patient exhibits fever and delirium resembling mania, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 2 liang. If the pulse is large but slow upon arrival, and the abdomen feels full though it is not distended, this indicates absence of heat; do not use Huangqin.
**Gancao San (Licorice Powder)** from *Zhen Dou Lun* (Treatise on Rash and Smallpox): Indicated when chuangzhen has not yet erupted, or has erupted but is accompanied by dryness and thirst.
Use large Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), quantity unspecified, roasted until golden, then ground into a fine powder. Take 1 qian or 2 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, filter out the dregs. Drink slowly at any time. Stop once slight relief of heat toxicity is achieved. If the eruption is delayed, Zicao Yinzi (Arnebiae Decoction) should be taken (see formula under "Early Stage of Chuangzhen," identical to *Shenghui Fang*). Adults should be needled at the interosseous space between the styloid processes of the radius and ulna in both wrists, taking the left side for males and the right side for females. Alternatively, moxibustion of one cone can also assist in the eruption. If the toxic qi of the rash/smallpox has already dispersed, these methods are unnecessary.
**Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction)** from *Zhen Dou Lun*: For chuangzhen accompanied by severe restlessness and panting.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba)
Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum)
Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex)
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted. Each 1 fen)
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. For every 1 liang of medicine, add 7 he of water, decoct until reduced to 4 fen, allow to cool to warm temperature, and administer. If the pulse is rapid and heat has not subsided, add half the amount of Zhuli (Bambusae Sap) in place of water for decoction. If there is sore throat and cough, add a small amount of Shexiang (Moschus).
**Huangbai Gao (Phellodendron Ointment)** from *Shenghui Fang*: After pediatric chuangzhen erupts, care must be taken to protect the face and prevent contamination. Before spraying Huisu Jiu (Coriander Wine), apply this ointment to the face first, then spray the limbs. This applies to adults and infants suffering from this disease.
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 1 liang)
Lvdou (Vigna radiata, 1.5 liang)
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw, 4 liang)
Pound the above herbs, sieve into powder, and grind again until fine. Mix with raw Sesame oil (Mazhi) to form a thin paste. Apply thickly to the area before the ears, eyes, and lips, three to five times daily. After applying the ointment to the face, Huisu Jiu may be sprayed. Applying this early prevents the eruption of chuangzhen. Late application reduces the severity even if eruption occurs. Most formulas for facial protection utilize this base method. Dosages and usage are generally consistent, except *Zhen Dou Lun* specifies 3.5 liang of Lvdou Fen (Vigna radiata powder) per batch.
**White Mustard Seed Application** from *Zhuang Shi Jia Chuan*: To prevent chuangzhen from affecting the eyes in children.
Grind Baijiezì (Sinapis Semen) into powder, mix with water, and apply to the soles of the feet.
**Wang Shi Shou Ji**: When pediatric chuangzhen first appears, let the child view boiled oils or similar substances. At each meal, strictly avoid soy sauce, vinegar, and the five pungent flavors, as well as meat from horses, cattle, chickens, geese, and game. Allow only bland cooked pork, plain congee, rice, and cakes. If the child cannot tolerate a bland diet long-term, adding a little salt is harmless. Additionally, before dawn while others are asleep, carry the child to a well and have them drop seven mung beans into the well, believing this prevents facial scarring. Furthermore, if a child with chuangzhen consumes eggs from cooked chickens or ducks, eye damage is inevitable. Even after recovery, such foods should be avoided for several months.
