Chao Shi Bing Yuan (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang), Eye Obstruction and Pterygium Section: The eyes are the essence of the Zang-Fu organs, an external manifestation of the Liver, as Liver Qi connects to the eyes. In children, Phlegm-Heat within the Zang-Fu organs steams and soaks into the Liver, rushing up to manifest in the eyes. Initially, there is only heat pain; as Heat Qi accumulates, it transforms into obstruction and pterygium (membranous growths obscuring vision). If the Heat is mild, only white pterygium forms. Small ones resemble millet grains, large ones resemble hemp seeds or beans. Depending on severity, mild cases produce a single pterygium, while severe cases may produce two or three. If no pterygium forms but a white obstruction arises, the disease is extremely severe, covering the entire cornea (black pupil area); if the whole eye turns white, blindness ensues. This obstruction also varies in severity. Mild cases show a slight white membrane encroaching on the edge of the cornea, gradually spreading. If not treated urgently, the Heat intensifies, leading to white obstructions covering the entire eye.
Zhang Huan stated that children indulging in sweet and sour foods cause redness and swelling of the eyes, which severely leads to pterygium formation, or amblyopia (blindness) where vision is lost. Bao Tong's song states:
"Heat steaming the Liver causes blurry vision; one must distinguish the severity of the illness. Mild cases involve redness, pain, and many hot tears; severe cases generate white pterygium resembling silver. Red vessels form fleshy growths at their heads; the pterygium obscures the eye like floating clouds. Frequently take Xi Gan San (Wash Liver Powder) to restore clear vision."
