For the above method, at night face the Big Dipper, press your hand against the ground, and moxa-burn the fingertips touching the ground. The incantation says: If caused by scorpion insects, stop the wood-breaking pain; if caused by wind insects, moxibustion will bring rest. Pain, pain, let the Big Dipper collect you, and it will heal immediately.

Another formula from *Qianjin Yi*
For the above method, after Ren Ding (approx. 9-11 PM), face the Big Dipper and recite the incantation: Big Dipper Seven Stars, Three Terraces Ministers, Person [Name] suffers from gingival disease. If it is wind-induced gingival swelling, close the gates; if it is worm-induced gingival decay, collect them all. Execute swiftly as per legal decree.
Bow three times and perform this for three nights.

The *Qianjin Yi* formula for treating toothache.
For the above method, take five sheng of Xanthium fruit (Cang'erzi, Fructus Xanthii), boil in one dou of water until five sheng remain. Hold the hot liquid in the mouth, spit it out when painful, then hold again. Do not exceed two doses for cure. If fruits are unavailable, stems and leaves may be used.

Another formula from *Qianjin Yi*
For the above method, take five liang of Radix Daphnes (Mangcao, Cortex Daphnes), cut into pieces, boil in one dou of water until five sheng remain. Use for gargling, consume or use up within one day.

Another formula from *Qianjin Yi*
For the above method, place powder of Rhizoma Veratri (Lilu, Rhizoma Veratri Albii) into the dental cavity. Do not swallow the juice. It is miraculous and effective.

Another formula from *Qianjin Yi*
For the above method, take peach stump from under the door, burn it to obtain juice. Put a small amount into the cavity and seal it with wax.

Acupuncture formula from *Qianjin Yi* for toothache.
Needle according to whether the pain is on the left or right side. At the webbing between the thumb and index finger (Hegu, LI4), insert one cun. Upon obtaining Deqi (arrival of qi), apply reducing method (Jie Bu, removing excess) for thirty-nine breaths.

Moxibustion formula from *Qianjin Yi* for toothache.
For the above method, take a branch from the southeast direction of a mulberry tree, more than one chi long, thick as the handle of a spoon, cut even at both ends. Place it in the mouth against the painful tooth. Moxa-burn it using fire lit by people of three different surnames. The incantation says: Son of the Red Emperor of the South, teach me to treat worm teeth. Moxa-burn mulberry branches with fire from three surnames; when the branch breaks, the scorpion insect dies. Execute swiftly as per legal decree. Highly effective.

Gargle decoction from *Qianjin Yi*, main formula for toothache.
Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Duhuo, Herba Angelicae Pubescentis), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin, Radix Scutellariae), Rhizoma Chuanxiong (Xiong, Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui, Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (each three liang); Radix Asari (Xixin, Radix Asari), Fructus Piperis Longi (Bibo, Fructus Piperis Longi), Flos Caryophylli (Dingxiang, Flos Caryophylli) (each one liang).
Grind the above seven herbs. Boil in five sheng of water until two and a half sheng remain. Gargle, spit out after about the time of a meal, then gargle again. (Another version includes two liang of Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, Gancao, Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata.)

Another formula from *Qianjin Yi*
For the above method, hold horse white urine in the mouth, gargle according to whether the pain is on the left or right. Heal within no more than three mouthfuls.

Zhang Huan's Benz San Formula for treating sudden onset pain.
Rhizoma Arisaematis cum Bile (Ben, Rhizoma Arisaematis Cum Bile), Radix Bupleuri (Baifuzi, Radix Bupleuri - *Note: Baifuzi usually refers to Typhonium, but context implies specific preparation*), Rhizoma Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong, Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Cortex Daphnes (Mangcao, Cortex Daphnes) (each half liang, all pounded and sifted into fine powder); Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, Folium Isatidis), Aloe (Luhui, Resina Aloes), Moschus (Shexiang, Moschus) (each one qian, finely ground).
Grind all ingredients uniformly again. Use one zi (a small unit of measure) each time, apply and rub onto the affected area.

Realgar (Xionghuang, Realgar), Moschus (Shexiang, Moschus) (half qian).
