To treat dysentery, use dried Portulaca oleracea (Ma Chi Xian) boiled until soft. For red dysentery, mix with honey; for white dysentery, mix with sugar; for mixed red and white dysentery, mix with half honey and half sugar. Consume twice a day, including the decoction, which is even more effective. Note: Portulaca oleracea is also known as Wu Fang Cao (Five Directions Grass). Its leaves are green, stems red, roots white, flowers yellow, and seeds black, possessing all five elements (Wu Xing), thus capable of treating both cold-heat and red-white dysentery.
Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder) This formula derives its meaning from "Heaven generates one water, Earth completes six," representing the essence of North Ren-Gui Water. It clears summer-heat toxicity, removes damp-heat, separates yin and yang, promotes urination, and drains Bing Water (referring to Heart Fire), discharging it through urine; hence, it is an excellent formula for treating dysentery.
Grind Bai Hua Shi (White Talcum) into fine powder, blend with clear water and float-wash it to remove heavy, turbid dregs. Wait for the water to clear, discard the water, and dry the residue. For every six liang of Bai Hua Shi powder, add one liang of finely powdered Gan Cao (Licorice Root), grind uniformly, and set aside.
For white dysentery, use seven qian of Liu Yi San and seven fen of Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) powder. For red dysentery, use seven qian of Liu Yi San and seven fen of Hong Qu (Red Yeast Rice) powder. Mix each with ginger juice and wheat flour paste to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take one or two qian per dose, washed down with warm water.
For chronic dysentery that does not cease, use three qian each of Hong Tang (Brown Sugar), Bai Tang (White Sugar), and Xi Tang (Maltose), one qian of Gan Cao (Licorice Root), and two qian of aged tea leaves. Boil together until cooked, leave exposed overnight, and take warm the next morning for miraculous effect.
For Jin Kou Li (Jin Kou Dysentery, characterized by inability to eat due to nausea/vomiting), take pork preserved in the twelfth lunar month, remove the meat, and keep only the bones. Boil the bones in a pot to make a thick broth, and drink it slowly. This method is highly effective.
To treat mixed red and white dysentery, use Shan Zha Rou (Hawthorn Flesh) in any amount, stir-fry, and grind into powder. Take one or two qian per dose. For red dysentery, mix with honey; for white dysentery, mix with brown sugar; for mixed red and white, mix with half honey and half brown sugar. Take with warm water on an empty stomach for better results. This medicine is effective regardless of deficiency or excess conditions, and regardless of whether the disease is recent or chronic. It is very stable and reliable.
Ji Cheng Zhi Sheng Dan (Integrated Supreme Pill - New Formula) Treats cold dysentery and chronic diarrhea unresponsive to other methods; recovery occurs after a single dose. When dysentery first begins, if it is due to excess heat and accumulation, it is easy to identify and treat. However, dysentery caused by cold accumulation in deficient individuals is often overlooked by physicians. Generally, excess heat syndromes present externally with fever, restlessness, dry lips, thirst, abdominal pain and urgency, tenesmus, yellow tongue coating, and surging-rapid pulse. Since the syndrome is urgent, treatment must be prompt: mild cases require purgation/drainage, severe cases require cold purgation. Once the accumulation is removed and yin-yang harmonized, cure is assured. In contrast, cold accumulation dysentery in deficient individuals presents without external fever/restlessness or internal acute abdominal pain. There may be mixed red and white stool, but no tenesmus; bowel movements are smooth, and urine is clear and profuse. This is because yin nature is slow, so external symptoms are not urgent. Do not condone this condition; instead, use Ji Cheng San Xian Dan (Three Immortals Pill) to purge and remove the accumulation. If not purged urgently, it will lead to serious complications. This accumulation, over time, sinks downward and lodges at the junction of the lower large intestine and upper rectum, in a hidden fold, the deepest part of the intestinal organs where drugs cannot reach. Symptoms fluctuate between light and heavy, remission and recurrence; stools vary between red and white, hard and loose, with no fixed pattern. Even divine pills are useless here. Because this accumulation is not in the abdomen but below the large intestine, by the time drugs reach this area, their potency has exhausted, turning them into chaff. How can they remove such deep-seated accumulation? This explains why cold dysentery may persist for three to five years or even ten-plus years. Ancient formulas used Ba Dou (Croton Seed) pills for purgation, but feared using them lightly in patients with long-term illness and depleted spirit. Now, using Ya Dan Zi (Brucea javanica) alone offers a rapid and safe solution. This herb originates from Fujian, Yunnan, and Guizhou provinces. Although not recorded in many materia medica, it is available in pharmacies. It resembles Yi Zhi Ren (Alpinia oxyphylla fruit) but is smaller. The shell is grayish-brown, the inner flesh white and oily, with an extremely bitter taste. Gently crack the shell with a small iron hammer; the kernel emerges, sized like a rice grain. Discard crushed kernels; use only whole kernels. For children aged three to five, use twenty-some kernels; for those over ten, thirty-some kernels; for adults, forty-nine kernels. Wrap each dose in Tian Yuan Rou (likely referring to a specific fruit pulp or wrapper, contextually implied as a protective coating). Children: three kernels per packet; Adults: seven kernels per packet. Swallow tightly wrapped packets on an empty stomach, followed by a meal to aid downward movement. The Tian Yuan wrapping helps the drug reach the lower large intestine. This medicine is not harsh and does not cause abdominal pain. When bowel movements occur, if white mucus resembling fish brain appears, this indicates cold accumulation. If no white mucus is seen, administer another dose after one or two days, or slightly increase the number of kernels. No further doses are needed thereafter. During medication, avoid meat and alcohol for three days, and duck meat for one month. This cures the root cause permanently. If the next day brings dull abdominal pain, use one root of Bai Shao (White Peony Root) and one root of Gan Cao (Licorice Root), each weighing three qian. Wrap in paper, moisten with water, roast in fire until cooked, remove, pound, decoct in water, and drink to stop pain immediately. I dare not keep this secret; I write it down to share with the world.
