Treatment for *Chongshe* (Heavy Tongue) and *Mushe* (Wooden Tongue), characterized by tongue swelling, fullness, stiffness, and rigidity, or unceasing pain preventing speech, is suitable to be treated by tying a coarse needle/thread to the tip of a chopstick, piercing the affected area. For severe cases, piercing dozens of times is optimal. Only pierce the tip of the tongue and both sides; the center and underside of the tongue must never be pierced, as doing so will cause uncontrollable bleeding. Blood that is red indicates mild toxicity; purple indicates severity; black indicates critical danger. Subsequently, apply powdered *Puhuang* (Cattail Pollen) to the tongue to resolve the swelling. If the tongue swells and hardens suddenly leading to cessation of breath, it is named *She Shan* (Tongue [sound: 'shan' entering tone]). Use an unspecified amount of *Zaofan* (Alum), roast it on a new tile over fire until it turns red, place it on the ground to cool, grind into fine powder, and apply to the tongue for immediate cure. This is effective for both Heavy Tongue and Wooden Tongue. (Note: Refers to the tongue swelling so much it resembles a decorative cover obscuring the root).
For tongue swelling and fullness preventing speech, crush *Meihua Bingpian* (Borneol from Plum Blossom) and apply; or mix *Shiyan* (Rock Salt) and *Baicaoshuang* (Soot from Hundred Herbs) into powder, dilute with well water, and apply for effect.
*Banshe* (Tied Tongue) refers to a tendon under the root of the tongue that tethers the tip, causing the tongue to retract and preventing suckling. Upon close inspection, a thread-like tendon can be seen under the tongue root pulling the tongue. Gently sever this tendon with a needle; ensure only this tendon is cut and do not accidentally injure the tongue root, as the consequences would be severe. I have seen foolish women use a knife to cut it, accidentally injuring the tongue root, leading to fatal hemorrhage.
A severed tongue can regenerate. Use one live crab, dry it by roasting, grind into powder, and apply. This prescription is extremely miraculous and effective.
The Classic states: "As heaven has arranged stars, humans have teeth." It also states: "The Hand-Yangming meridian enters the lower teeth; the Foot-Yangming meridian enters the upper teeth." Thus, we know the upper teeth belong to the Stomach, the lower teeth belong to the Large Intestine, and the teeth are governed by the Kidney. Delayed tooth eruption indicates insufficient Kidney Qi. Since the Kidney governs bones, and teeth are the surplus of bones, insufficient Kidney Qi leads to marrow deficiency, failing to nourish the teeth, hence delayed eruption. *Dihuang Wan* (Rehmannia Pill) is appropriate.
Swelling of the upper and lower gums indicates excess heat in the Hand-Yangming and Foot-Yangming meridians. Use *Liangge San* (Cool the Diaphragm Powder) as the principal formula, add *Zhimu* (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), *Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum), and *Shengma* (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) as assistants, and frequently gargle and swallow.
*Chongyin* (Double Gum) is caused by accumulated heat in the Kidneys attaching to the gums, causing swelling and pain. Pierce with a needle to release blood, wash with salt water, and apply powdered *Huangbai* (Phellodendri Cortex); this is effective. Children who consume excessive fatty meat may develop foul-smelling, rotting teeth, known as *Bixi*. This is due to excess heat in the Stomach and Diaphragm. Internally administer *Hangxie Dan*, and externally gargle with *Jingli* (Schisandra Juice) mixed with ginger juice.
*Yagan* (Tooth Gangrene) begins with foul odor, followed by blackening of the teeth, and severely progresses to rotting gums and bleeding, named *Xuanlu*. This is due to Kidney heat rushing to the Upper Jiao, likened to a running horse (indicating rapid progression), requiring urgent treatment. If the upper and lower lips break, the nose perforates, and teeth fall out, it is named *Bengsha*. With panting, tidal phlegm, and reduced food intake, it becomes incurable. Internally administer *Hangxie Dan*, and externally apply *Rusheng San*.
Teeth grinding during sleep is caused by Wind-Heat. Accumulated heat in the Hand-Yangming and Foot-Yangming meridians generates wind, causing teeth to strike each other. It occurs specifically during sleep because Wind belongs to Yang; when active, wind moves in the Yang aspect; when still, wind returns inward. Use *Xuanfeng San* (Disperse Wind Powder).
Among cases of teeth grinding, only those appearing during smallpox/variolous diseases are critical; others pose no major harm. Some patients clench teeth due to tremors and chattering jaws from illness; treating the underlying condition will stop it naturally.
Teeth that do not regrow after falling out are due to constant licking by the tongue, causing the tissue to become thick and callous. Pierce to remove stagnant blood, apply *Shugu San* (Rat Bone Powder), and they will naturally regrow.
