Pediatric epilepsy is mostly caused by fire pathogen and phlegm turbidity. For instance, a slippery pulse accompanied by foaming at the mouth indicates a phlegm syndrome. A scattered pulse with red cheeks indicates heat-fire invading the Liver meridian. The symptoms of onset vary: some present with eyes staring straight or deviating, clenched jaws, and drooling; some exhibit convulsions of hands and feet, curved waist, and stiff spine; some appear as if dead; some take one to two hours to regain consciousness. It is appropriate to administer Dao Tan Tang (Phlegm-Resolving Decoction). This formula treats the initial stage of the five types of epilepsy; for mild cases, administration brings immediate relief.
Realgar (Xionghuang), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Guangpi), Poria (Fuling), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Bei Xixin), Pogostemonis Rhizoma (Changpu), Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), Periostracum Cicadae (Chongtui, feet removed), Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma), Curcumae Aromatiae Rhizoma (Yujin), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (each 3 fen), using Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi) as guides.
If a child suddenly falls into coma with convulsions and has strong physical strength, it is an excess syndrome known as Liver Epilepsy. It is appropriate to administer Chaihu Qinggan San (Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Powder).
Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhiren), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng) (each 6 fen). If there is constipation, add prepared Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Shu Jun) and Gentianae Radix (Danchao), each 5 fen, decoct in water and take orally.
If a child suddenly falls into coma with red eyes, protruding tongue, and desire to drink water, this is Heart Epilepsy. It is appropriate to administer Zhusha Anshen Wan (Cinnabar Calming-the-Mind Pill).
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 3 fen), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (each 1 qian), Cinnabaris (Zhusha, 3 fen). Grind together into powder, form pills with rice paste, and coat with Cinnabar.
If a child falls into coma with eyes staring straight, fever, and a shiny, lustrous complexion, this is Spleen Epilepsy. It is appropriate to administer Dao Tan Tang (Phlegm-Resolving Decoction) [see formula mentioned earlier in this section]. Add Perillae Folium (Zisu), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), and Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu).
If a child suddenly falls into coma with a pale face and slight twitching of hands and feet, this is Lung Epilepsy. It is appropriate to administer Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Miracle-Efficiency Powder).
Panax Ginseng Radix (Renshen), roasted Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Jiaozhu), Poria (Fuling), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (equal parts), decoct in water and take orally.
If a child suddenly falls into coma, limbs rigid like a corpse, and foams at the mouth, this is Kidney Epilepsy. It is appropriate to use Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction) [see Hemoptysis section].
Sudden death in children often belongs to phlegm confusing the mind. Use equal parts of Alum (Baifan) and Soot from Hundred Herbs (Baicaoshuang), mix with boiling water, and灌 (pour/administer); the patient will surely regain consciousness.
External treatment methods for the five epilepsies: If purple-blue veins are visible between the high bone behind the ear, puncture them with a needle to awaken the patient.
Another method involves administering Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi).
Another method uses Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Yazao), and Crotonis Semen (Badou) ground into powder; blow a small amount gently into the nose to awaken the patient.
Another method uses juice extracted from crushed garlic; lift with a tea spoon and drip into the nose; three applications yield efficacy.
