Cold qi entering the bladder forms Cold Lin (cold strangury), characterized by urinary obstruction, abdominal distension that is difficult to endure, continuous dribbling, and dull pain in the abdomen. Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) with doubled Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Xiaohuixiang (Fennel Fruit) is miraculous.
[Note] Cold Lin is caused by wind-cold pathogens invading the Bladder, leading to cold in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), thus forming Cold Lin. Its manifestations include urinary obstruction, unbearable distending pain, intermittent dribbling, and dull pain in the Shaofu (lower abdomen). It must be treated with Wuling San augmented with Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) and Xiaohuixiang (Fennel Fruit), after which the strangury will heal itself.
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria)
Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) Zhuling (Polyporus) Chifuling (Poria with Red Coir) Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) Xiaohuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus)
Decoct in water and take orally.
[Prescription Verse] Wuling treats cold strangury, Baizhu, Zexie, and Zhuling; double the use of Rougui, mix with Fennel and red Poria.
Heat accumulation in the Bladder forms Heat Lin (heat strangury); Shiwai Daochi Tang (Ten-Ingredient Decoction to Guide Out Fire) has remarkable efficacy. If there is lower abdominal distension and fullness accompanied by constipation, immediately administer Bazheng San (Eight-Herb Corrective Powder) without delay.
[Note] Heat Lin is formed by heat accumulation in the Bladder. Symptoms include urinary retention, dribbling with astringent pain; treat primarily with Shiwai Daochi Tang. If there is lower abdominal distension and fullness, pain radiating to the umbilicus, and dry stool, treat primarily with Bazheng San.
Shiwai Daochi Tang (Ten-Ingredient Decoction to Guide Out Fire)
Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) Qumai (Dianthi Herba) Huashi (Talcum) Danzhuye (Lophatheri Folium) Yinchenshao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw) Zhuling (Polyporus)
Decoct in water and take orally.
[Prescription Verse] The ten ingredients of Daochi are most effective: Shengdi, Shanzhizi, and Mutong combine; Qumai, Huashi, and Danzhuye; Yinchen, Huangqin, Gancao, and Zhuling.
Bazheng San (Eight-Herb Corrective Powder) (See prescription under "Urination Difficulties")
Long-term accumulation of damp-heat forms Stone Lin (stone strangury); urination resembles sand and stones with pain in the urethra. For mild cases, Kuizi San (Malva Seed Powder) is required; for severe cases, Bazheng San can follow.
[Note] Stone Lin is characterized by pain in the urethra during urination, often passing material resembling sand or stones. It is caused by long-term heat accumulation in the Bladder. Just as a kettle bottom becomes encrusted with white scale after prolonged heating, so too does this condition form. Mild cases are treated with Kuizi San; severe cases are treated with Bazheng San.
Kuizi San (Malva Seed Powder)
Sangpi (Mori Cortex) Qumai (Dianthi Herba) Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) Chifuling (Poria with Red Coir) Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw) Kuizi (Malvae Semen)
Decoct in water and take orally.
[Prescription Verse] Kuizi San treats stone strangury: Sangpi, Qumai, and Zhizi kernel; Chifuling, Mutong, and Cheqianzi; Gancao and Kuizi are mixed evenly.
