General Overview: Among the four syndromes of night crying, the one caused by Wind-Convulsion (Jing Feng) presents with tearing upon seeing light, mental restlessness, and heat; bluish discoloration of the face, cheeks, and below the umbilicus; dark complexion, loud crying, which is due to disturbance of the Spirit (Shen Gan).
Pulse Diagnosis: Observing the fingerprint on the tiger's mouth (Hu Kou), if the fingerprint is invisible and appears dusty in color, this indicates an invasion by external pathogens (Ke Wu) or malevolent spirits, which inevitably leads to night crying.
When Pan Chang Qi (Intestinal Colic) occurs, it first manifests as curvature of the waist, crying without tears, dry eyes, open mouth, cold feet, blackish upper lip, and beads of sweat flowing from the forehead.
The *Nei Jing* states: The Heart stores the Spirit (Shen); when the Spirit is peaceful, the Zang organs are harmonious. Infants have peaceful spirits during the day and sleep soundly at night. If there is Heat in the Heart or Convulsive Heat, or if Cold-Wind pathogens invade, the spirit cannot remain stable, leading to incessant night crying.
Heart Heat Syndrome: Crying intensifies upon seeing light, with a red face and abundant tears; it subsides slightly in the absence of light. Fire is a Yang entity; when Heart Heat encounters Fire, two Yangs clash, causing intense crying at the sight of a lamp. Thus, the *Classic* says "Fire generates Phlegm and Wind," which explains this mechanism. Treatment should cool the Heart and calm the Spirit using San Jie San (see Wind-Convulsion section, remove Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma [Renshen], administer with Mint Decoction [Bohe Tang]).
Convulsive Heat Syndrome: Caused by wearing too many clothes or sitting for long periods in hot places, resulting in stuffiness and malignant Heat attacking the Heart. The Heart stores the Spirit; peace brings harmony, while disorder brings convulsion. The treatment method is to reduce Heat and settle the Heart, after which peace will naturally return, using Niu Bang San (Burdock Powder) and Bao Long Wan (Dragon-Holding Pill).
Some infants cry more than they wail from dusk until midnight; others cry continuously until dawn. This is due to Cold contracted in the womb. At night, Yin prevails and Yang is weak, hence the curved waist, sweating forehead, tearless eyes, pale face with bluish cheeks, prone position while crying. This is a symptom of abdominal pain drawing inward, named Han Shan (Cold Hernia). The treatment method is to eliminate residual Cold and warm the Lower Jiao, using Bai Shao Yao Tang (White Peony Decoction) and Gou Teng Wan (Uncaria Pill).
Night crying due to violating taboos presents with a purplish-black complexion, Qi stagnation resembling anger, cries sounding fearful, startle during sleep, holding the mother tightly, and unceasing loud crying. This is due to offending malevolent spirits; the eyes saw something but the mouth cannot speak of it! An ancient saying goes: "If the hands suddenly appear shapeless, know that you have offended evil deities." For such cases, where both finger fingerprints are hidden and invisible, the treatment method is first to release the Exterior using Bai Jie San (Hundred-Resolving Powder), then to expel Evil and settle the Heart using Su He Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) and Bao Long Wan (Dragon-Holding Pill).
Wailing (Ti) and Crying (Ku) also differ. Wailing without crying indicates Pain, characterized by direct sounds without tears; Crying without wailing indicates Startle, characterized by continuous sounds with abundant tears. It is also said: Wailing without crying is Restlessness (Fan); Crying without wailing is Dryness/Irritability (Zao).
Bluish face, white sclera, curved waist while crying, and cold abdomen upon palpation indicate Cold-induced abdominal pain.
Red face, mental irritability, dark and scanty urination, heat in the mouth and abdomen, occasional sweating, and supine position while crying indicate a Heat Syndrome.
Another case involves crying as soon as milk reaches the infant's mouth, with heat in the body, head, and forehead. One must check that there are no sores in the mouth; otherwise, it is必定 swelling and pain of the throat and tongue.
