After the Zi hour (11 PM–1 AM), when Yang fire is abundant, it belongs to Yang fire and should be drained (Xie). After Wu hour (11 AM–1 PM), when Yin fire is abundant, it belongs to Yin fire and should be supplemented (Bu). If fever precedes chills, it indicates Yin interfering with Yang; treatment should first drain then supplement. If chills precede fever, it indicates Yang interfering with Yin; treatment should first supplement then drain. If the illness worsens during the day, one should suppress Yang. If the illness worsens at night, one should suppress Yin.
Bend the middle finger joint of the child; this length is defined as one cun. Half of this length is five fen. This does not refer to the standard units of measurement for length.
The child's Yuan Qi (Original Qi) prevails in the Three Passes (San Guan). Pushing up the Three Passes ignites the True Fire. As this True Fire steams upward, it nourishes the Five Zang Organs, causing the child's meridians and vessels to flow harmoniously. Once Yuan Qi is sufficient, pathogenic factors recede. If heat persists despite extreme intensity, push down the Six Fu Organs. However, if it is not extreme heat, using this method will increase coldness; it is safer not to use it. Excessive cold in the Six Fu Organs exacerbates the disease; only when Water and Fire (Yin and Yang) interact in balance is there auspiciousness. Explanation: Pushing the Three Passes generates heat, while pushing down the Six Fu Organs generates coolness. This is analogous to the use of major cold or major hot herbal formulas by physicians. For conditions that are not major cold or major hot, both methods must be used alternately to achieve the principle of mutual assistance between Water and Fire.
For cases with severe body heat, simply scoop the Mingyue point or rub Yongquan (KI 1, Well Point) to guide heat downward. Alternatively, rub the navel and Jiutui (CV 15, Jiuwei), and apply chewed young tea leaves to the Neiguan point (PC 6, Inner Pass). Another method is to apply indigo dye to the four centers of the hands and feet. Yet another method is to mix water powder paste and apply it to the Taiyang points and the four centers of the hands and feet; the heat will subside.
For cases with severe body chill, rub Wailaogong (EX-UE 9, Outer Labor Palace), HT Men point, Ershanmen (EX-UE 8, Two Gate Doors), push the Three Passes, and rub Yang positions. The method involves finely rubbing Qiai (Artemisia argyi Herb) and applying it with heat to the navel; warmth returns immediately.
To induce sweating, push the Three Passes, rub Ershanmen, and employ the "Yellow Bee Enters the Cave" technique.
To stop sweating, push down the Six Fu Organs and supplement the Lung Meridian. If sweating does not cease, administer a decoction of Xiaomai (Triticum aestivum Fruit, Floating Wheat); effectiveness is immediate. Spontaneous sweating without disease is common in children and should not cause excessive concern.
To induce vomiting or purging, push from Wailaogong to Daling (PC 7, Great Ravine); using the vomiting technique here is considered the primary method. Reversing the push from Daling back to Wailaogong drains Heart Fire without cessation issues. Perform three left rotations followed by one right rotation for massaging; this is a true secret wisdom passed down by immortals.
To stop vomiting and purging, which is pitiable when milk and food are vomited, push from HT Men to the transverse crease. If pushed from the transverse crease back to HT Men, the child suffering from vomiting and purging will regain peace. The mnemonic is simple: remember that past cases emphasized treating severe conditions heavily and light conditions lightly.
These techniques, combined with those for Wailaogong mentioned above, all utilize circular pushing. For boys, rotate to the left; for girls, rotate to the right. When eliminating pathogens, use heavy pressure; when supporting healthy Qi, use light pressure. This section requires detailed study.
