Abdominal distension in children can be treated with equal parts of Radish Seed (Lai Fu Zi), Perilla Stem (Zi Su Geng), Kudzu Root (Ge Gen), and Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi), with a small amount of Licorice Root (Gan Cao) added, decocted and taken orally. If food intake is reduced, Atractylodes Rhizome (Bai Zhu) may be added. Another method: use one large toad, place it inside a pig's stomach, boil until cooked, remove the toad, and have the child consume the entire stomach. If the pulse is excess and the constitution is robust, purgation might be considered, followed by consolidation using Atractylodes Rhizome (Bai Zhu) as the principal herb. If abdominal distension is due to food stagnation, use Mu Xiang Bing Lang Wan for heat patterns, or a formula containing Mu Xiang, Magnolia Bark (Nou Pu), Clove (Ding Xiang), Amomum Fruit (Sha Ren), Medicated Leaven (Shen Qu), and Cyperus Rhizome (Xiang Fu) for cold patterns, formed into pills with steamed wheat bread dough.
