Chao Yuanfang stated: When a child is in the womb, if the mother's nursing and care are improper and she is injured by wind-cold pathogens, the pathogenic qi enters the uterus and damages the fetus's zang-fu organs. Therefore, after birth, the pathogenic qi remains within the infant's abdomen. When the pathogenic qi moves and contends with the healthy qi (Zheng Qi), it causes abdominal pain, leading the infant to frown, hold their breath, and cry.
Douteng Gao (Uncaria Decoction): Treats dry crying (crying without tears) in infants... (Formula see "Abdominal Pain").
Zhang Huan stated: When an infant is in the womb, if the mother's nursing and care are all irregular, and there is excessive indulgence in cooling foods and cold drinks, cold qi enters the infant's stomach and intestines. This weakens the fetal qi, resulting in an infant who is born frail, prone to illness, and cries frequently while moving up and down. This is called "Fetal Cold Crying," and one should use Yangzang Tang (Nourish Viscera Decoction).
Yangzang Tang (Nourish Viscera Decoction):
Chuan Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang), Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang).
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, add 8 fen of water and 2 slices of fresh ginger, decoct until 4 fen of liquid remains, filter out the dregs, let cool to warm temperature, and drip occasionally into the infant's mouth.
Huangqi San (Astragalus Powder) from *Yingru* treats fetal cold in young children, causing abdominal pain and crying.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xiong (Chuan Xiong, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (3 fen), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (6 fen-zhu).
Grind into powder. For a 20-day-old infant, mix with breast milk to the size of a broad bean; administer once day and night, three times a day. For a 50-day-old infant, the size of a small bean. For a 100-day-old infant, two small beans. The medicine warms the middle and is non-toxic. If Huang Qi is unavailable, it may be omitted. Administer immediately after birth to prevent the generation of cold qi and avoid vomiting. Continue for one year; stopping is optimal. If cold qi stagnation causes unbearable pain and crying, decoct in water and drink, similar to the method for Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill). The nourishing effect of this medication can be dozens of times greater than standard doses without causing distress.
Shi Shi Formula: Treats weak fetal qi and disharmony of Yin and Yang, causing incessant crying day and night.
Ru Xiang (Frankincense, finely ground in water using a stone mortar), Mo Yao (Myrrha, finely ground), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Jiang Huang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma) (each 4 qian), Mu Bie Zi (Strychni Semen, 20 seeds, shell removed).
First, grind the last three ingredients into fine powder. Then incorporate the first two ground ingredients. Mix with refined honey to form a pill mass. For each year of age, administer half the size of a soap pod. Adjust other ages according to judgment. Dissolve in Douteng Tang (Uncaria Decoction) and administer at any time. Subsequently, use Weixiang San.
Weixiang San (Agarwood Powder):
Peng E Zhu (Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, wrapped in wet paper and roasted), True A Wei (Ferulae Resina, 1 qian).
First, dissolve A Wei in warm water, soak Peng E Zhu for one day and night. Slice, bake dry, and grind into powder. Take 0.5 qian per dose, mix with Zisu Mi Yin (Perilla Seed Drink) on an empty stomach. Once crying subsides slightly, administer Kaicai Wan.
Kaicai Wan (Appetizing Pill):
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Peng E Zhu (Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 0.5 liang), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 fen).
Grind into fine powder. Use steamed dough soaked in hot water to make pills the size of millet seeds. Take 5-7 pills per dose, before meals on an empty stomach, taken down with She Xiang Tang (Musk Decoction).
Baizhu Danggui Jian Wan (Atractylodes and Angelica Decoction Pill): Treats fetal cold abdominal pain, nighttime crying, body stiffness resembling epilepsy, incessant vomiting, sour-smelling diarrhea, and failure to gain flesh despite adequate milk intake.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix).
Equal parts of the above ingredients, ground into fine powder. Form pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in Muxiang Tang (Aucklandia Decoction).
Liushen San (Six Spirits Powder): Treats abdominal pain with crying, bluish complexion, cold breath, cold limbs, crying with bent waist, or diarrhea and refusal to suckle.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian), Fu Ling (Poria), Bian Dou (Viciae Craccae Semen, stir-fried) (each 1 liang).
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with 2 slices of ginger and 1 jujube, decoct and drink. Another prescription uses Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (each 2.5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), and Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 qian), ground into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct in water, and administer frequently.
