[Hai Zang] Baishou San (Hundred Longevity Powder): Used for infants under one month of age; it prevents sores and scabies in old age.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) (1 liang) Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (1 qian)
Decoct the above ingredients in water. Have an elderly woman wipe clean the saliva from the infant's mouth, then administer the decoction orally. Pour the remaining medicine into a basin to bathe the infant, and apply it all over the body; this is excellent.
*Craniotomy Classic* (Luxin Jing): Give Pinghe Yinzi (Peaceful Decoction) on the day of birth (*Zhi Mi Fang* records: administered to the nursing mother three days after birth).
Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参) Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) (each 2.5 qian)
Add one cup of water, decoct until half a cup remains. Administer frequently. The nursing mother should avoid greasy food. At full moon (one month) and hundred days, if affected by exogenous cold pathogens, add Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术); if heat, add Mirabilite (Xiaosha, 芒硝), each half a qian.
(Do not diagnose other diseases within the first month.)
The *Qianjin Fang* states: When the sprout (infant) emerges from the womb, flesh and bone are not yet consolidated, muscles are not yet formed, and it is still essentially blood coagulating; when blood coagulates, it hardens to form muscle. It also says: like bubbles on water, like dew on grass tips. Within the first week after birth, how could the evil winds of heaven and earth cause rapid harm? This is truly because during gestation, the mother failed to protect herself, or exertion caused disturbance of qi and blood, or sitting and lying with improper hunger and satiety, drinking alcohol and eating meat, conflicting hot and cold temperatures, fear, fright, and falls, leading to chaotic blood vessels and internal accumulation of toxins, damaging fetal qi. Thus, after birth, conditions such as fetal heat, fetal cold, fetal obesity, fetal weakness, fetal fright, and fetal jaundice arise. External causes include improper methods for bathing, wiping the mouth, cutting the umbilical cord, and moxibustion on the fontanelle, or tight swaddling causing fright, inappropriate temperature management during breastfeeding, leading to conditions such as lockjaw, wind affecting the umbilicus, locked abdomen, and failure to suckle. Once patients reach this stage, treatment is difficult, and one can only watch them die, which is truly pitiable. Therefore, the Yellow Emperor said: I cannot thoroughly examine illnesses of the young, considering them a separate category requiring specific management. Those using medicines must clearly observe physical signs, determine life and death, assess the depth of the illness, and understand the cold and warm properties of drugs, so that mistakes may be minimized.
*Qianjin Fang*: If an infant dies immediately after birth, examine the area anterior and superior to the uvula in the infant's mouth for the presence of a vesicle/bulla (the *Qianjin Yifang* describes it as a red vesicle; use fingernails to puncture the head of the vesicle, allowing it to rupture and drain blood, ensuring blood does not enter the throat, as entry into the throat will kill the infant; be extremely cautious.)
