The monk Song Cheng of Nantai Temple in Wuwei transmitted to Wen Fa from Xichuan a "forbidden" (magical/ritual) method for treating Huoyan Dan (Flame Carbuncle, an acute skin infection characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain resembling fire). The procedure is as follows: Take five pine torches (torches made of pine resin), each as thick as a chopstick, and ignite one end. Hold the burning torch in the right hand, and use the thumb to pinch the crease of the middle phalanx of the right middle finger; perform the same pinching action on the left middle finger with the left hand. Stand facing north, calmly visualize the water of Ren and Gui (Ren and Gui are Heavenly Stems associated with Water in Five Element theory) of the north, vast and boundless, inhale it all in one breath, and then blow onto the fire. Visualize again and blow again, repeating this three times. Then, test the fire near your own mouth; if it does not burn you, pass the pine torch around the area of the infant's Huoyan Dan once, and draw a cross over the lesion, which concludes the treatment. If the fire burns and causes pain during the test, continue visualizing absorbing water. This practice should be performed on the first day of the New Year and on Dragon Boat Festival.
[Xue Ji's Commentary] Among all sores and ulcers, Ding Du (Ding carbuncles/poison) is the most severe and kills quickly. Ancient texts state: "There are twelve types of Ding," each different. If the thirty-six critical internal Ding points are fully affected, it is incurable; however, some die before reaching this number due to the dispersion of toxic vapors. Cases where smallpox toxin infects a person, manifesting on the head, face, or whole body, do not belong to this category. In infants, this condition is often caused by the wet nurse consuming toxic substances, the infant suddenly ingesting dietary toxins, or contracting abnormal Qi of the four seasons. The lesions mostly appear on the head, face, and limbs, varying in shape and color: some resemble small sores, others blisters; symptoms include pain, itching, or numbness and insensitivity. External signs include chills and fever, vomiting, nausea, and limb stiffness. Generally, one must distinguish whether the pathogen is in the exterior or interior. Urgently apply Garlic-Separated Moxibustion and administer detoxifying formulas. If the patient loses consciousness or suffers from trismus (lockjaw), urgently grind Duoming Dan into powder, mix with hot wine, and force-feed. If cold/raw foods are consumed or cold water is splashed on the body, mild cases become difficult to cure, and severe cases become untreatable. Ding arising on the feet often has red threads extending to the umbilicus; those on the hands extend to the heart region; those inside the lips and mouth extend to the throat. Urgently prick with a needle to drain evil blood to vent the toxicity, ensuring safety. For lesions in remote areas where medicines cannot easily reach, only moxibustion has the power to revive the dying; using harsh and drastic drugs is dangerous. Infants have tender and fragile muscles and cannot express pain. When applying moxibustion, slice garlic thinly, slightly hollow out the side touching the skin, place moxa on the garlic, and test the temperature on an adult's arm first. Once the heat is comfortable, move it to the lesion. Prepare another moxa cone, test it similarly, and alternate them without interruption.
