The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: For male infants, use old cotton wadding from clothes worn by the father; for female infants, use old clothes worn by the mother. Do not use new cotton wadding, and absolutely avoid making the clothing too thick, as this may cause intense heat in the infant, leading to sores (*chuang yang*) and convulsions (*jing xian*), all of which originate from this practice. Chao Yuanfang stated: When an infant is first born, the skin and muscles are not yet fully formed. One should not dress the infant too warmly, as this will cause the sinews and bones to become lax and weak. The infant should be exposed to wind and sunlight frequently. If completely shielded from wind and sun, the skin and muscles will become brittle and soft, making them susceptible to injury. If infants are kept hidden within curtains, wrapped in heavy layers of warm clothing, it is like plants growing in the shade without exposure to wind or sun, becoming soft and fragile, unable to withstand wind and cold. All infants should wear clothes made of old cotton wadding, not new cotton. During times when the weather is warm and windless, the mother should hold the infant and play with them in the sunlight. Frequent exposure to wind and sun will make the blood refined and the Qi firm, causing the muscles to become dense and tough, enabling the infant to endure wind and cold and preventing disease. Infants should also be trained in wearing thin clothing, starting from autumn. One should not suddenly reduce their clothing in spring and summer, as this will expose the infant to wind and cold. In winter, infants should only wear lined garments or padded quilts (*na yi*). Only in extreme cold should old cotton wadding be gradually added. Many families, out of love for their children, overdress them in thick cotton, which is actually harmful. Furthermore, one must monitor the infant to prevent sweating. Sweating leads to deficiency and damage, making the infant vulnerable to wind and cold. This must be guarded against day and night, whether awake or asleep. After the newborn reaches one month of age, they must be swaddled. The method of swaddling must be appropriate. In spring and summer, when all things are growing, it is suitable to teach the infant to lie on the ground, aligning with the energy of growth. In autumn and winter, when all things are storing, it is suitable to keep the infant in warm places, aligning with the energy of storage. In this way, the blood becomes refined and the Qi harmonious, and various diseases will have no entry. Zhu Danxi said: Before the age of sixteen, human blood and Qi are abundant, like the rising sun or the nearly full moon. However, Yin is often insufficient. The method of nurturing requires great caution. It is a well-known ancient maxim that young boys should not wear fur robes or silk garments. "Chang" refers to lower-body garments; "Bo" (silk) is warmer than cloth; "Qiu" (fur) is softer and warmer than silk. Since the lower body governs Yin, exposure to coolness promotes the growth of Yin, while warmth causes Yin to decline. Therefore, avoiding thick, warm garments made of cotton or silk for the lower body prevents hindrance to Yin Qi. This is indeed a sound conclusion.
