What is the cause of black spots in the eyes resembling flying cicadas or flies? The answer is: Kidney deficiency (Kidney Xu). The Kidney belongs to Water; if Kidney Water withers, it results in Kidney deficiency. It is advisable to apply Huye (Tiger Liquid) and Qinglong Gao (Green Dragon Ointment) topically, and take Zhuling Tang (Polyporus Decoction) and Bushen Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Pill) orally.
Zhuling Tang (Polyporus Decoction)
Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudi), Polyporus (Zhuling), Cistanche Herba (Roucongrong) [washed with wine], Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi), Rubi Fructus (Fupenzi)
No specific guide herb is needed; decoct in water and take orally.
Bushen Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Pill) (Note: Bushen Wan appears in Questions 54 and 66 with identical formulations.)
Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) [soaked in wine, 1 liang], Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu) [remove roots, 1 liang]
Natrii Chloridum Viride (Qingyan, 2 qian), Magnetitum (Cishi) [quenched seven times in vinegar, washed with water, 2 qian], Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang, 5 qian, separately ground), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi) [boiled in wine until soft and mashed, 2 qian]
Grind all into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 70 pills per dose, administered with salted water on an empty stomach.
What is the cause of tearing upon exposure to wind? The answer is: Kidney deficiency. Liver Wood generates wind; when Kidney Water withers and fails to nourish Liver Wood, and since Liver Wood is the "child" organ of Kidney Water, tearing occurs upon exposure to wind. It is advisable to apply Fenglin Yangnao Yu (Phoenix-Lamb Brain Jade) topically and take Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) orally.
Mingmu Dihuang Wan (Bright-Eye Rehmannia Pill) (Note: Question 48 also mentions Dihuang Wan, but the formula differs; this formula is based on Xue's selected prescription minus Dendrobii Caulis.)
Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi, 1 jin, soaked in wine), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudi, 1 jin, soaked in wine and steamed nine times), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 4 liang), Aurantii Fructus (Zhiqiao) [remove pulp and bran, stir-fried, 4 liang], Cyathulae Radix (Chuanniuxi) [remove rhizome, 4 liang], Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren) [remove skin and tips, 2 liang]
Grind all into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 50 pills per dose.
What is the cause of red vessels extending onto the cornea (black pupil)? The answer is: Heart Fire governs Blood, and Liver Wood governs sinews. When Blood invades the sinews, and due to the common source of Liver and Heart, the pathology transmits to the eye, hence termed "Blood Eye." This condition often involves the pulling of the cornea. It is advisable to take Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction); if symptoms persist, take Danggui San (Angelica Powder) again, and apply Zhenzhu Gao (Pearl Ointment). (Note: Zhenzhu Gao is suspected to be a formulation based on Huye or similar ointments supplemented with Pearl and Amber.)
Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction) (Note: By replacing Phellodendri Cortex with Rhei Radix, this becomes the Sanhuang Wan formula, see Question 52 below.)
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 2 qian, stir-fried with wine), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 1.5 qian), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 2.5 qian)
Danggui San (Angelica Powder)
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi) [stir-fried]
