Treats warm-heat diseases (Wenre Bing) and epidemic febrile diseases (Shixing). It addresses excess heat in both the exterior and interior, as well as hyperactivity of Heart Fire (Xin Huo Kang Sheng), manifesting as red eyes, constipation, and macules caused by Stomach Heat (Wei Re).
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, soaked in wine, 2 liang) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, 6 qian) Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 1 liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang)
Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, 8 qian) Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 7 qian)
Grind into a powder. Take 4–5 qian per dose, add 15 leaves of Zhuye (Bambusae Folium), decoct with water, and take warm. Administer three times during the day and twice at night. Discontinue when bowel movements are unblocked and fever subsides. (The version from Shi's collection lacks Zhuye but includes one slice of Jiang [Zingiberis Rhizoma], one Zao [Jujubae Fructus], and one stem of Congbai [Allii Fistulosi Bulbus].) Mangxiao and Dahuang, aided by the heavy, sinking nature of Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), guide the lower heat downward smoothly. Assisted by the light, ascending nature of Huangqin, Shanzhi, Lianqiao, and Bohe, the upper heat is suppressed while the lower part becomes clear. This distinction defines the difference between Chengqi Tang (Purgative Decoction) and Liangge San (Cooling Pagoda Powder). The use of Gancao follows the principle of Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Regulate the Stomach Purgative Decoction). Since Ju Fang (Standard Formulary) specifically targets warm-heat epidemic diseases, Zhuye is used. For treating common cold (Ganmao) patterns, one may follow Shi's version by adding Congbai, Jiang, and Zao.
Qingxin San (Clear Heart Powder) Treats high fever, coma with muteness, and obstruction of urination and defecation in warm-heat epidemic diseases.
Add 1 liang of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to Liangge San, grind into powder. Take 4–5 qian per dose, add a handful of Zhuye, a small amount of Baimi (Honey), decoct, and take. If headache occurs, add Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum). If ineffective, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba).
Zhanshe Wan (Tongue-Turning Pill) Treats stroke-like syndromes characterized by stiff tongue, muteness, and unclear consciousness.
Add 1 liang each of Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) and Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) to Liangge San. Make pills with refined honey, coat with Zhusha (Cinnabaris), and swallow dissolved in Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction).
Runzao Tang (Moisten Dryness Decoction) Treats sore throat, irritability, and constipation resulting from the excessive use of hot herbs such as Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) in patients with variola or chickenpox.
Remove Mangxiao and Dahuang from Liangge San. Add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), and Niuzangzi (Arctii Fructus).
Tongsheng San (Universal Salvation Powder) Treats apoplexy (Zhongfeng) in the northwest region, characterized by extreme internal and external heat.
Remove Zhuye from Liangge San. Add Mahuang, Shigao, Huashi (Talcum), Sheng Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fangfeng, Jingjie, Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chuanxiong, Danggui, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
Shuangjie San (Double Release Powder) Treats warm-heat epidemic diseases with extreme internal and external heat.
Double the dosage of Huashi in Tongsheng San. Use Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
