Treats *Xuan Yin* (Hanging Phlegm-Fluid, fluid retention in the hypochondrium) causing internal pain. There is water qi accumulating under the ribs, and the pulse is wiry and rapid.
Yuan Hua (Spurge Flower, processed by stir-frying), Gan Sui (Kansui Root), Da Ji (Euphorbia Root, soaked to remove woody core). These three herbs are used in equal proportions.
The above three herbs are crushed and sifted. Take 1.5 sheng of water, first decoct ten large Jujubes (Ziziphus jujuba fruits), split open, until reduced to 0.8 sheng. Remove the dregs, and add the herbal powder. Strong individuals take one qian bi (a small measuring spoon dose); frail individuals take half a qian bi. Take warm on an empty stomach at dawn. If the purgation is slight and the disease persists, administer again the next day, increasing the dose by half a qian bi. After achieving thorough purgation, nourish oneself with millet porridge. (Note: Buzhi Shi Wan adds Sheng Jiang juice; Shanghan Wufa formula adds Rou Gui.)
Shen You Wan treats Yang Edema (Yang-type edema) manifesting as swelling and distension, with constipation of both stool and urine.
Take each ingredient of the original Shizao Tang in 1 liang, add 2 liang of Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), 4 liang of the head-end powder of Hei Qian Niu (Black Morning Glory Seed), and 1 qian of Qing Fen (Calomel). Make pills using the flesh of boiled red dates. Initial dose: 5–7 pills, taken three times daily. Gradually increase the dose until free purgation is achieved. Commentary: This formula, originally from Zoushen (Liu Wansu), is based on Zhang Zhongjing's Shizao Tang, adding Qian Niu Zi, Da Huang, and Qing Fen. It is twice as harsh as Shizao Tang. However, by administering it slowly in pill form, its potency is maintained without being overly aggressive, which is the best method. Adding Qing Pi, Chen Pi, Mu Xiang, and Bing Lang (each 0.5 liang) to Shen You Wan creates Zhou Che Shen You Wan, which is superfluous. Furthermore, adding Ru Xiang and Mo Yao to Zhou Che Wan to create Chu Shi Dan represents a degeneration of good practice and should not be imitated.
Kong Xian Dan treats diseases caused by phlegm accumulation in the hypochondrium.
Remove Yuan Hua and Da Zao from Shizao Tang, add Bai Jie Zi (White Mustard Seed) in equal proportion, grind into powder, and make pills using fermented dough paste. Dosage: 15–20 pills per administration. For palpitations due to fright, add Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) and Quan Xie (Scorpion). For alcohol-induced phlegm, add Xiong Huang (Realgar) and Quan Xie. For masses formed by fright qi, add Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scale), Bie Jia (Turtle Shell), Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizome), and Peng Ze (Curcuma Longa). For arm pain, add Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Jiang Huang (Turmeric Rhizome). For cough with phlegm, add Feng Hua Xiao (Alum that has effloresced). For cold-phlegm, add Ding Xiang (Clove), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), and Hu Jiao (Pepper). Gan Sui reaches directly to the site where phlegm-fluid congeals; Da Ji attacks phlegm-fluid in the chest and hypochondrium; Bai Jie Zi breaks up fluid accumulation in the branches and nodes. This is a harsh agent for attacking phlegm-fluid. In patients who are physically robust, have dark complexion, strong breath, and a solid pulse presenting the above symptoms, taking this medicine for a few doses will make the illness vanish like nothing happened. Subsequently, use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) to regulate and tonify. If administered mistakenly to those with pale complexion, loose stools, and clear copious urine (indicating Qi deficiency), adverse changes will occur shortly thereafter.
