Moyao Gao (Waist-Rubbing Paste): Treats hypochondriac pain in the elderly and those with deficiency constitutions. It also treats leukorrhea in women that is clear, watery, and odorless.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Chuan Wutou (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) (each 2 qian), Shujiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), Xionghuang (Realgar), Zhangnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) (each 1.5 qian), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (1 qian), Shexiang (Moschus) (1 fen).
The above ingredients are ground into fine powder, mixed with honey to form pills the size of a bullet. For each use, take one pill, dissolve it in fresh ginger juice until it forms a paste, apply it to the palm, warm it, and rub it onto the painful area of the waist. Then, secure it tightly with a loose cloth band. After a short while, the area will feel hot as fire. Use one pill daily after meals. (Note: The version circulated in the world lacks Shujiao and erroneously includes Zhusha [Cinnabar].)
Sanbi Tang (Modified Three-Obstruction Decoction): Treats combined pathogenic factors of wind, cold, and dampness, leading to stagnation of qi and blood, and spasms/contracture of the hands and feet.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (stir-fried with wine), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Fuling (Poria) (each 1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (roasted), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Wutou (Aconiti Radix) (processed, each 5 fen), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma) (3 slices), Hongzao (Jujubae Fructus) (2 pieces).
Decoct in water and take hot at any time. This formula integrates the principles of Baoyuan Tang, Sijunzi Tang, Neibu Jianzhong Tang, Fangji Huangqi Tang, Fangji Fuling Tang, and Qianjin Fangji Tang. It adds Fangfeng to search out wind from the qi level, Chuanxiong to search out wind from the blood level, and Xixin to search out wind from the bone marrow. From the original formulas, it removes Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), and Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), and adds Fangji, Baizhu, and Wutou to dispel wind-dampness. Thus, methods such as Shenfu Tang, Shufu Tang, Guifu method, and Zhenwu Tang are all contained within. Where others use the potent nature of Fuzi to disseminate true yang, this formula relies on the fierce nature of Wutou to dispel stubborn bi-syndrome. Generally, mixed pathogens require mixed formulas to be considered appropriate combinations. One might fear that yin-nourishing and softening herbs like Dihuang and Niuxi lack the vigor for rapid sweeping action; hence, slight adjustments are necessary. Practitioners should not consider modifying established formulas as presumptuous.
Shao Yangshen (Roasted Sheep Kidney) (from Qianjin Fang): Treats kidney deficiency complicated by cold-damp invasion, causing severe lower back pain preventing standing.
Gansui (Kansui Radix), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (or Fuzi according to some versions), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Renshen (Ginseng Radix).
The above four ingredients are equal in proportion, ground, and sifted. Place one fangcunbi (a square-inch measure) of the powder into a sheep kidney, roast until cooked, and consume.
Qing'e Wan (Green Robe Pill) (from Ju Fang): Treats lower back and lateral hypochondriac pain due to kidney deficiency.
Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus) (stir-fried until fragrant), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) (stir-fried with salted wine until fibers break) (each 4 liang).
Grind the above two ingredients into powder. Combine with 30 walnuts (including skin) and 1 liang of Qingyan (Halitum) cleaned of sand and soil. Pound together into a paste, add a small amount of refined white honey, and mix to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in warm wine on an empty stomach.
Hugu San (Tiger Bone Powder): Treats pain extending from the lower back and hips to the knees and ankles, persisting day and night.
Hugu (Tiger Bone) (prepared with butter), Baiguiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) (prepared with butter), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanbixie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (each 2 liang), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 1 liang).
Grind into powder. Take 4 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine on an empty stomach. Honey pills may also be used, taken with warm wine.
Erzhi Wan (Two Solstices Pill): Treats lower back pain due to kidney deficiency in the elderly, characterized by inability to bend or stretch, dizziness, blurred vision, and flaccidity/weakness of the lower body.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (processed, 1 piece), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (1 liang), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) (stir-fried with salted wine), Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus) (stir-fried, each 2 liang), Lurong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum) (prepared with butter), Mirong (Elaphuri Cornu Pantotrichum) (prepared with butter, each one set).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Add 0.5 liang of Qingyan (Halitum), dissolve in hot wine to remove impurities, and mix with 1 liang of Lujiaojiao (Colla Corii Asini) to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 70 pills per dose on an empty stomach, chewed thoroughly with one walnut and delivered down with pure wine. If the patient dislikes heat, remove Fuzi and add Rongrong (Cynomorii Fructus) 1 liang, Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) glue 1 liang, and double the dosage of Duzhong and Buguzhi. Note: Deer are mountain animals with a purely yang nature; their antlers are yang within yang, shedding at the summer solstice when they receive yin qi. Elk are wetland animals with a highly yin nature; their antlers are yin containing yang, shedding at the winter solstice when they receive yang qi. This formula uses both antlers, hence the name "Erzhi" (Two Solstices). Combined with Guixin, Fuzi, Duzhong, and Buguzhi to vigorously warm the liver and kidney, it is indeed a key medicine for the elderly to tonify lower yuan deficiency and subdue floating deficient fire. However, mirong and lurong are rarely distinguished in practice. Lurong has yellow hair, narrow antler bases, and thin skull bones; mirong has dark hair, open antler bases, and thick skull bones. People value deer antler over elk antler, calling large, short, stout, round, and lustrous ones "qiarong." They do not know that large ones are mostly mirong; true large lurong is rare. Even those resembling a saddle shape and tender are good. Those that are solitary, dry, too short, and lacking qi-blood are worthless. Observe the nodes below the antler: if there is only one layer, the deer is young and vigorous; if the antlers resemble bamboo shoots, the deer is old and weak.
