During the Kaithong era of the Tang Dynasty, a divine person stayed overnight at the Zhang family residence in Ci County. The next day, he handed a book to Mrs. Zhang. Upon opening it, she found it was a gynecological text. Initially, it discussed regulating menstruation (Tiaojing), employing methods to harmonize Qi and Blood (Qi Xue) and balance Cold and Heat (Han Re), resulting in no woman in the world being unable to conceive. Subsequently, it addressed preconception care, emphasizing tonifying Qi and Blood and clearing Phlegm-Fire (Tan Huo); for any symptoms arising, the primary approach was to first stabilize the fetus (An Tai). It then distinguished between preconception and postpartum conditions, noting their differing management. This book remained hidden for centuries until I obtained it, containing thirteen medical treatises without omitted cases. Preconception and postpartum conditions are clearly differentiated, significantly differing from the prescriptions used by other physicians. I transmit this to contemporary doctors to hopefully spare women from great hardship. Those who obtain this book should cherish the intention to preserve life and not keep it secret.
For young women unable to conceive, there is no other cause but irregular Qi and Blood and uneven Cold and Heat. In cases of Excess Qi and Deficient Blood: Qi and Blood circulate freely throughout the four limbs, preventing Blood from accumulating in the Uterus (Zigong). The Uterus becomes dry and easily receives Yang Qi, making conception impossible. It is crucial to tonify Blood so that Blood and Qi match, thereby enabling pregnancy. Generally, those with Excess Qi and Deficient Blood have menses that do not arrive on schedule, coming every few months or even once a year. Physicians must not diagnose this as Blood Obstruction (Xue Ge). It is crucial to tonify Blood and strictly avoid invigorating Blood and breaking stasis (Po Xue). In cases of Excess Blood and Deficient Qi: Blood cannot move on its own but follows Qi. With Deficient Qi failing to transport, Blood accumulates in the Uterus; when full, it overflows. Menses arrives irregularly, currently termed "Bai" (Decay/Defilement). One must strictly avoid blood-nourishing formulas, as such herbs also invigorate Blood; tonification brings no benefit and may exacerbate the condition. Instead, heavily use Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) to tonify Qi, allowing Qi to match Blood, thus curing the disease and enabling pregnancy. In cases of Excess Heat: Menses arrives early. Severe heat causes severe abdominal pain; mild heat causes mild abdominal pain. Do not mistake this for Cold pain; although Yang Qi enters easily, can conception occur? One should administer cooling formulas to regulate. In cases of Excess Cold: Menses arrives late, with no abdominal pain. If Essence and Qi cannot enter easily, how can they remain long in the abdomen? One should administer warming formulas to regulate. Once Qi and Blood are balanced and Cold and Heat harmonized, infertility will be resolved!
