Zeji (Euphorbia helioscopia): Also known as Mao'er Yanjingcao. It is guided by Xiaodou (Vigna angularis). It is incompatible with Shuyu (Dioscorea opposita). Pungent, bitter, slightly cold. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine and Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine meridians. Eliminates phlegm and promotes water metabolism, treats malaria, and reduces fever. Combined with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), it treats Fu Jia (latent masses). Mixed with sesame oil for external application, it treats tinea corporis. Boiled into a paste for topical application, it treats Luoli (scrofula). Contraindicated in patients with Qi and Blood deficiency.
Gua Di (Cucumis melo var. conomon seed): Guided by itself. Incompatible with Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix). Incompatible with Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Sweet, bitter, cold. Toxic. Enters the Qi level of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian. Reaches directly to sites of fluid accumulation, attacking and resolving water trapped in the collaterals. (It circulates through the twelve meridians, causing water to exit via the anal canal.) Combined with Dahuang and Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla), it treats Xue Jie (blood stasis). Combined with Zhuling (Polyporus) and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), it treats Zhuan Pao (urinary retention). Combined with Gancao, it treats Xin Xia Liu Yin (fluid retention in the epigastrium). (The Kidney governs water; stagnation forms Phlegm-Fluid, overflow causes edema. Draining dampness from the Kidney meridian addresses the root of Phlegm-Fluid.) Powder mixed into male pig kidneys, roasted thoroughly, taken one slice daily, treats severe edema resembling floodwaters. The powder must be wrapped before roasting. Misuse severely damages Yuan Qi, leading to abdominal distension and death.
Xuisui Zi (Euphorbia lathyris): Also known as Lianbu. Pungent, warm. Toxic. Promotes the dispersion of all chronic stagnations, descending water with great speed. For various abdominal diseases, ground and taken with wine, no more than three seeds, will cause the evacuation of pathogenic matter. Remove the shell, take the white kernel, grind into a paste, wrap in paper, press to remove oil, and use the residual cake (Shuang). It is toxic and harmful; do not use lightly. If used correctly, it is an important medicinal herb.
Bimazi (Ricini Semen): Avoid fried beans. Suppresses Dansha (Cinnabaris) and Fenshuang (Calomelas). Pungent, sweet, hot. Toxic. Its force has an absorbing nature, capable of drawing pathogenic qi out to the muscle surface. Its nature is agile and moving, capable of opening orifices to unblock meridians. Treats Luoli, draws out pus from sores. Combined with Ruxiang (Olibanum) and Yanshi (Halitum), pounded into cakes and applied to Taiyang acupoint, treats wind-type headache. Combined with Yangzhi (Mutton Fat) and Shan Jia (Manis Squama), with a small amount of Shexiang (Moschus), fried in oil into a plaster, massaged several times daily, treats Pian Feng (facial paralysis). Remove shell, extract oil, apply to paper, burn to smoke and inhale, treats bleeding from the tongue, Hou Bi (sore throat), and swollen tongue. For all types of swelling and toxicity with unbearable pain, ground and applied externally provides immediate relief. Internal use is contraindicated. After internal use, beans must not be consumed, otherwise fatal abdominal distension occurs.
Strange Syndrome: Both breasts become thin like intestines, hanging below the lower abdomen, with unbearable pain, named Ru Xuan (Hanging Breast). Apply Bimazi to the vertex (Baihui acupoint), then frequently drink decoction of Xiong Gui Tang (Ligusticum Chuanxiong and Angelica Sinensis Decoction), and inhale the smoke burned from these two herbs.
