For any sudden apoplexy where the jaw is clenched and medication cannot be administered, take the flesh of a Chinese plum (Wumei) to rub with the powder of Rhizoma Arisomatis Tenuifolii (Tian Nan Xing) and Herba Asari (Xi Xin). Dip the middle finger in this mixture and wipe it; the jaw will naturally open. (*Wei Sheng Bei Yao*)
For sudden apoplexy causing collapse and muteness, blow a small amount of Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis Powder (Zao Jiao Mo) into the nasal cavity for spontaneous recovery. (*Bai Yi Fang*)
For sudden apoplexy with fainting, tightly clenched jaw, flooding saliva obstructing the airway, and loss of consciousness:
Immediately pinch the Renzhong acupoint (GV26) with the thumb until the patient wakes. Alternatively, use Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata Powder (Ban Xia Mo), or a mixture of Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis (Zao Jiao), Herba Asari (Xi Xin), and Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shi Pu) powdered and blown into the nose to induce sneezing. If the jaw is locked shut, dip a preserved white plum (Bai Yan Mei) in Silkworm (Jiang Can) and wipe it. Wait for slight recovery before inviting a physician for further treatment. (*Dan Fang Quan Ji*)
Sudden wind-stroke (when medication cannot enter the mouth): Take Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng) and Astragali Radix (Huang Qi) in equal parts. Boil them to make a decoction, place the pot under the patient's bed, close doors and windows, and let the medicinal vapor fumigate the mouth and nose.
This works because the formless vapor penetrates and opens the有形 (tangible) orifices. (*Xu Shimie Fang*)
Sudden attack by evil pathogens: Blow Realgar Powder (Xiong Huang Mo) into the nose for immediate recovery. (*Ben Cao Lei Fang*)
Sudden onset of Five Corpse diseases: Symptoms include abdominal pain and distension, inability to breathe properly, qi rushing upward to the chest and heart, attacking both flanks, hardness or bulging, or pulling sensations in the lower back and spine. This is caused by "corpse ghosts" within the body. Take thatch grass from the four corners of the roof, place it in a copper vessel, cover the abdomen with a three-chi long cloth touching the vessel, burn the thatch on the cloth to generate heat, moving the heat source along with the pain. Recovery occurs when itching appears under the feet. (*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
Tong Ding San (Pass-Top Powder): For patients suffering sudden stroke with confusion, loss of consciousness, and locked jaw: Immediately mix Ginseng Radix (Ren Shen), Veratri Radix (Li Lu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, raw), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong), and Herba Asari (Xi Xin) (each 1 qian), and Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao) (0.5 qian) into a powder. Blow into the nose. After a moment, pull the hair at the vertex of the head; the patient will recover immediately. Those who can sneeze are treatable; those who cannot are not. (*Qian Kun Sheng Yi*)
Dark Wind (An Feng) sudden collapse with loss of consciousness: Blow Herba Asari Powder (Xi Xin Mo) into the nose. (*Wei Shi De Xiao Fang*)
Swelling of flesh due to Zhong E wind or water: Take soil from beneath mulberry roots, mix with water, apply as a poultice, and moxa 20-30 moxibustion units. The penetrating heat will resolve the condition. (*Shi Yi*)
For all acute conditions including stroke with phlegm-jue, throat obstruction, and unconsciousness: Take oil from a lamp wick or lamp reservoir, sweep it into the throat to induce vomiting, which will restore consciousness. (*Tong Shou*)
For all acute conditions including stroke with phlegm-jue, qi-jue, Zhong E, and throat obstruction, characterized by throat discomfort and locked jaw: Grind Croton Seed (Ba Dou) into a paste, wrap in cotton paper, and press to extract oil. Make a paper wick from the oil-paper, light it to produce smoke, and fumigate the nose.
Alternatively, insert hot smoke into the throat; saliva will flow out immediately, or foul blood will be expelled, leading to recovery. This is a secret recipe. (Ibid.)
For stroke with phlegm accumulation, use this method to vomit phlegm: Croton Seeds (Jiang Zi Ren) (6 seeds), Toothed Soap Pod (Zhu Ya Zao) (3 qian, sliced), Alum (Ming Fan) (1 liang). First dissolve the alum, mix with the other two ingredients evenly, dry until the alum becomes brittle, then powder. Blow a small amount ("one character" weight) into the nose to cause salivation and jaw opening. If phlegm blocks the throat, mix 0.5 fen of Centella Asiatica Herb (Deng Xin Cao) decoction and administer to induce vomiting. Another formula excludes Croton Seeds. (*Zheng Zhi Hui Bu*)
For stroke with teeth grinding where no medicine can be given: Rhizoma Arisomatis Tenuifolii (Tian Nan Xing) (0.5 fen) and Borneolum Syntheticum (Long Nao) (0.25 fen) powdered. Frequently rub the sides of the large molars to generate heat and naturally open the jaw, then administer medicine. Best prepared at noon on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. (Ibid.)
Stroke with deviation of the mouth and eye: Mix newly smelted stone (Duan Shi) with vinegar to a mud-like consistency and apply. Apply to the right side if the left is deviated, and to the left side if the right is deviated. It corrects immediately. (*Kou Shi Yan Yi*)
Deviation of the mouth and eye: Use one eel. Prick its head to draw blood. Apply to the right side if the left is deviated, and to the left side if the right is deviated. Wash off once corrected. Release the eel to prevent recurrence. (*Wan Bing Hui Chun*)
Another formula: Take 5 liang of Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis (Zao Jiao), remove skin and seeds, powder it, and mix with aged vinegar. Apply to the right palm if the left is deviated, and to the left palm if the right is deviated. Hold a cup of warm water near the palm. It stops quickly. Wash off the medicine and pull the middle finger. (*Yi Jing*)
Numbness of the body: Powder mustard seeds (Jie Cai Zi), mix with vinegar, and apply. (*Ji Sheng Mi Lan*)
Chronic paralysis and bone/joint pain for many years: Decoct branches of Sophora Root (Huai Zhi), Peach Twig (Tao Zhi), Willow Twig (Liu Zhi), Toona Twig (Chun Zhi), Broussonetia Twig (Chu Zhi) (replace with Torreya Twig/Zhe Zhi in some formulas), Eggplant Peel (Qie Pi), and Qicheng Mugwort (Qi Ai) in three buckets of water. Soak and wash in a large basin. Add hot water if it cools. Cover with a blanket to sweat and avoid wind. Repeat several times if not cured; highly effective. (*Qi Fang Lei Bian*)
