Ordinary people, in their daily diet and sexual relations, if they can exercise self-restraint and cherishing, this is the cultivation of oneself and virtue. If one indulges in willfulness, acting recklessly without fear or restraint, allowing faults to accumulate and grow secretly, then diseases will follow.
Even if caused by external contraction of Wind-Cold (Wind-Cold exogenous pathogenic factor), or due to internal injury from the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, Fright), leading to the separation of Hun and Po spirits, loss of spiritual mastery, emptiness and looseness of the muscle tissue, and dysfunction of the bones and limbs, allowing Wind-Cold pathogenic factors to penetrate inward. However, those who cultivate virtue, even when in secluded darkness, dare not do evil; even when enjoying honor and wealth, dare not commit wickedness; they dress according to their body's needs and eat according to their portion; though rich and noble, they dare not indulge in desires; though poor and lowly, they dare not force demands. Thus, externally there is no brutality, and internally there are no diseases. Generally, if the heart is calm, the True Spirit remains in its place; if the Qi is settled internally, evil filth leaves the body: practicing deceit leads to mental confusion; engaging in contention leads to spiritual depression. Insulting others inevitably reduces one's lifespan; killing living beings inevitably harms one's years. Doing one good deed brings joy to the soul and spirit; doing one evil deed disrupts the heart Qi. If a person can live with broad-mindedness and tranquility, maintaining inner peace and detachment, then both form and spirit remain quiet, disasters and diseases do not arise, fortune and longevity flourish eternally, starting from here. The methods of health preservation are like holding jade vessels and full basins with caution to protect the body, and like approaching deep abysses and treading on thin ice to nourish the Qi. Drinking alcohol should not exceed limits, eating meat should not be excessive, minced food should be fine, staple foods should be refined, flavors should be light, and hunger and satiety should be balanced; this is preserving health through regulating diet. In spring, do not wear too little clothing; in summer, do not wear clothes while sweating; gradually add layers in autumn and winter; do not suddenly remove clothes when hot; this is preserving health through careful dressing. Sleeping should not be rigid like a corpse, sitting at home need not be overly formal, walking should be slow, and sitting posture should be restrained; this is preserving health through proper movement and rest. Joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness should return to the mean and harmony; greed, wrath, ignorance, and delusion must be seen through. One must constantly broaden the mind, be content with what one has, follow fate, see through all matters, worry not, and rage not, laughing freely and naturally; this is preserving health through regulating temperament. Reduce sexual desire, speak less, avoid attending funerals and visiting graves casually. Avoid terrifying waves and startling winds early. Do not get drunk, do not overeat; daily activities and movements should be pleasant and relaxed. The above points are feasible for everyone, truly secret recipes for longevity, excellent prescriptions for curing diseases, easy and not difficult, provided that people are willing to believe and follow, pay attention to maintenance, then extending life is certain without doubt.
