During the prevalence of epidemic pestilence, if a child develops fever, it is identified as a seasonal epidemic (Shiyi). If symptoms suddenly appear such as upward deviation of the eyes, opisthotonos (body bent backward like a bow), and convulsions of the limbs, do not mistakenly diagnose it as wind-stroke or infantile convulsion (Jingfeng); treating it according to the principles for seasonal epidemics will lead to spontaneous recovery.
Taiji Wan: Treats seasonal epidemics.
Ingredients: Tianshuhuang (Tian Zhu Huang, Calamus Rhizoma with Bamboo-juice processed), Dansheng (Dan Xing, Arisaema Cum Bile), Jiudahuang (Jiu Dahuang, Rheum Palmatum Root and Rhizome processed with wine), Zhijiangcan (Zhi Jiangcan, Bombyx Batryticatus processed), Shexiang (She Xiang, Moschus), Bingpian (Bing Pian, Borneolum Syntheticum) (each 5 qian for the first two, 2 qian for Dahuang, 3 qian for Jiangcan, and 2 fen for She Xiang and Bingpian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients into fine powder. At noon on the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu), process with honey to make pills the size of Euryale Seed (Qianshi). Whenever an epidemic condition occurs, administer one pill with ginger decoction; it is highly effective. Alternatively, use Chuxisan (Snuffing Powder) insufflated into the nose (formula see previous page). Oral administration of Renshen Baidu San is also effective (formula see "Mistaken Convulsion" section).
Epilepsy (Xianzheng) often results from being misdiagnosed as convulsion in the early stage of illness. The mild use of sedative and heavy-settling agents causes the pathogenic factor to be sealed and retained between the diaphragm and membrane. Consequently, upon exposure to wind-cold or cold beverages, internal phlegm is stirred up, leading to sudden collapse, rigidity of the four limbs, closed eyes or upward rolling of the eyeballs, trismus (lockjaw), tongue biting, salivation or lack thereof, bluish or pale complexion, or sounds resembling those of domestic animals. The manifestations vary, constituting a severe condition in children. After a brief period of unconsciousness, the child wakes up as usual. The interval between attacks may be measured in days, months, or years. This is due to inherent weakness of the Middle Qi (Zhongqi) and Spleen deficiency generating phlegm. It is appropriate to first administer Xiaofeng Wan, followed by Dingxian Wan from *Yizong Jicheng*, as described below.
Xiaofeng Wan: This is not a specific medicine for epilepsy but is used to disperse external pathogens and unblock meridians, thereby facilitating the efficacy of subsequent medications.
Ingredients: Bohe (Bohe, Mentha Haplocalyx), Qianghuo (Qianghuo, Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Duhuo, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fangfeng (Fangfeng, Saposhnikoviae Radix), Tianma (Tianma, Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Jingjiesui (Jingjie, Schizonepetae Spica), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xixin (Xixin, Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Dannanxing (Dan Nanxing, Arisaema Cum Bile) (2 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Process with refined honey to make pills weighing 1 qian each. Take one pill daily. Dissolve and take with decoction of Bohe and Suzye (Perilla Leaf). After finishing seven pills, proceed to the following medication.
*Yizong Jicheng* Dingxian Wan
Ingredients: Renshen (Ren Shen, Ginseng Radix) (1 liang; for those with weak constitution, double the dose using Dangshen/Dang Shen, Codonopsis Radix), Biaobai Zhu (Tu Chao Bai Zhu, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, earth-fried) (1.5 liang), Yunling (Fu Ling, Poria), Guangpi (Jiu Chao Chen Pi, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, wine-fried), Fa Banxia (Ban Xia, Pinelliae Rhizoma preparatum), Danggui (Jiu Xi Dang Gui, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed), Baishao (Jiu Chao Bai Shao, Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-fried), Baikouren (Jiu Chao Baisha Ren, Amomi Fructus Rotundus, wine-fried), Piaocangzhu (Heihuzi Ban Chao Cang Zhu, Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with black sesame seeds) (each 1 liang for the above items), Zhen Longchi (Huo Cu Cui Long Gu, Draconis Os, calcined with vinegar, ground, levigated, dried; use only 5 qian), Chijinbo (Chi Jin Bo, Folium Aureum) (30 sheets), Jing Chen Sha (Jing Sha, Cinnabaris, levigated) (3 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Process the herbs, bake until dry, grind into extremely fine powder, and sieve. Process with refined honey to make pills the size of longan seeds. Coat with Zhusha (Cinnabar) and apply gold foil. Dry and store in porcelain bottles. Take one pill each morning, noon, and evening, dissolved in ginger decoction. This formula is suitable for recent onset of epilepsy. For chronic cases lasting many years, take this pill at noon and evening, and in the morning, take Heche Bawei Wan (see *Youyou Jicheng*).
