Pediatric patients have marrow that fails to fill the bones and blood that fails to nourish the sinews, resulting in weakness and inability to walk. This can be treated with Hugu Yin (Tiger Bone Decoction), or Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) added with Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), and Lu Rong (Deer Antler) processed with wine. If the constitution is weak due to deficient Liver Qi, causing spasms and contraction of both legs and weakness in extending both hands, Yiyi Ren Wan (Coix Seed Pill) must be used for treatment.
Hugu Yin (Tiger Bone Decoction)
Hu Jing Gu (Tiger Tibia Bone), Gan Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Dang Gui Shen (Codonopsis Root or Angelica Sinensis Root Base), Zao Ren (Ziziphus Seed), Fu Ling (Poria), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark).
Grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with rice gruel broth and a small amount of wine. Administer twice daily.
Yiyi Ren Wan (Coix Seed Pill)
Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed), Zao Ren (Ziziphus Seed), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome).
Equal parts, made into honey pills the size of an Euryale Seed (Qianshi). One pill per dose, dissolved in Jingjie Decoction (Schizonepeta Decoction), with Shexiang (Musk) added.
After birth, if the infant's head, neck, limbs, muscles, and mouth appear soft, it is due to insufficiency of congenital Yang Qi. For head and neck softness,服用 Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) (see Fontanelle section); for severe cases, apply Xingfu Gao (Star Aconite Plaster). For limb muscle and mouth softness, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) is the primary treatment (see Obstetrics section). In cases caused by prolonged vomiting and diarrhea, leading to sudden depression of the fontanelle and eyes, and collapse of the Tianzhu Bone (neck spine), add Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root) to Buzhong Yiqi Tang, and concurrently administer Dihuang Wan ingredients.
Yu Zijing stated: Soft muscles indicate scanty flesh and loose skin; soft mouth indicates poor feeding and relaxed tongue. Both are disorders of the Spleen and Stomach. Some infants are born with red flesh all over the body, lacking skin entirely, or having skin resembling fish bladders or crystal. These are also caused by the mother's deficiency of Spleen Qi. For those without skin, apply a mixture of Jing Mi Fen (Rice Flour) and yellow earth. For those with skin like fish bladders or crystal, apply Mituo Seng (Lead Monoxide) ground into fine powder. For those with redness and fever, apply Shi Gao (Gypsum) ground into fine powder.
Xingfu Gao (Star Aconite Plaster)
Nan Xing (Pinellia Tuber Processed with Alum/Arisaema Rhizome), Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root).
Equal parts, ground into powder, mixed with fresh Ginger Juice for topical application.
Dr. Xue stated: The symptoms of Wu Ying (Five Stiffnesses) include holding the head back to breathe, difficulty in movement, qi stagnation causing pain radiating to the chest and diaphragm, and cold, stiff palms and soles. This is due to Yang Qi failing to circulate to the four extremities. He further stated: Cold and stiff hands and feet indicate solitary Yang without Yin, which is difficult to treat. If the abdominal veins are blue and tense, it indicates Wood overacting on Earth; immediately use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) added with Pao Jiang (Processed Ginger), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), and Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) to restore true Qi. If wind-pathogen lodges in the four extremities causing stiffness and cold, the etiology must be sought within the context of Wind Convulsion disorders.
Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root).
