Headache caused by Wind-Cold invasion presents with fever, aversion to cold, nasal congestion, and pain in the limbs and joints. Huagai San (Hua Gai Powder), Wuge San (Wu Ge Powder), and Xiaofeng San (Xiao Feng Powder) can all be used as main treatments. If suffering from Toufeng (Head Wind) accompanied by dizziness, puncture the Fengfu (GV16) acupoint. Do not insert the needle vertically downwards, lest it damage the major tendons, which would lead to drowsiness and mental confusion. Insert the needle towards the horizontal crease of the left ear, to a depth of three or four fen. Retain the needle for twenty breaths (hu) during insertion and removal; feeling heat and numbness in the head indicates efficacy. If Wind pathogen invades the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel, it causes hemicephalic headache (Pian Tou Feng), either on the left or right side, with pain radiating to both eyes and teeth. Moxibustion should be applied to the Naokong (GB13) acupoint for twenty-one moxa cones. This acupoint is located three cun five fen above the posterior hairline at the back of the head. Additionally, moxibustion should be applied to the two Mu Chuang (GB15) acupoints, located one cun five fen directly above the ears, twenty-one moxa cones each. For left-sided pain, moxa the left side; for right-sided pain, moxa the right side. (The disease of Toufeng has diverse manifestations, and few achieve proper treatment methods, resulting in lifelong stubborn ailments. The acupuncture and moxibustion methods proposed by Mr. Dou are excellent, but unfortunately, physicians do not understand them, and patients fear pain.)
Hyperthermia stagnating in the Liver Channel attacking upwards causes visual obscurity and nebula formation. First, administer several doses of Xi Gan San (Xi Gan Powder), followed by Bo Yun San (Bo Yun Powder), after which the nebula will naturally dissipate. In elderly individuals, if Kidney Water is depleted and cannot ascend to nourish the eyes, causing bilateral visual blurring that gradually darkens and turns yellow, this is termed Neizhang (Internal Cataract). Administer Huan Jing Dan (Huan Jing Pill). After half a month, if heat rises in the eyes, do not fear. This signifies the recovery of Kidney Qi ascending to the eyes. If heat is felt, rub the Guangming (GB37) acupoint with the palm once; within a month, vision will recover to its original state. (Ophthalmic medications often disregard principles, relying solely on dispersing and cooling agents, referred to as "eye garbage." If everyone were to follow Mr. Dou's methods, the number of blind people in the world would decrease significantly.)
Clinical Case
A female servant in my household suddenly lost sight in both eyes. Upon examination, there was no visible nebula. Considering she was young and her essence and Qi had not yet declined, I pondered the cause. It was likely due to her irritable and angry temperament, which injured the Liver, leading to irregular meridians and this condition. I prescribed one dose of Mi Meng Hua San (Mi Meng Hua Powder), and her vision returned to normal brightness. (Diseases manifest in myriad ways, while the physician maintains a single focused mind. With the thread of diagnosis in hand and clarity of thought, why fear the complexity of the disease? There is no need to worry about lacking therapeutic strategies.)
