Deficiency and damage of the lower yuan (lower origin), combined with prolonged standing in damp places, causes cold-dampness to invade the meridians, resulting in swelling and pain in both feet and weakness in walking. Washing feet with cold water during summer months can also lead to dry Hongxiangjiao (dry gout/foot qi). When it attacks, it causes swelling and pain from the soles of the feet up to the calves, feeling like burning or scalding, accompanied by fever and aversion to cold. The treatment method is to moxa Yongquan (KI 1) acupoint, which will permanently eliminate the root of the disease; if not moxaed, taking Jin Ye Dan (Golden Liquid Pill) in large amounts is also good. Ordinary medicines are only effective temporarily and cannot completely eradicate the disease. For those unable to walk, moxa Guanyuan (CV 4) for fifty moxibustion cones. It is strictly forbidden to use cooling herbs, as they drain and injure Kidney Qi, leading to abdominal fullness and distension, which can result in death. In chronic cases of Hongxiangjiao, dampness attacks upward, causing spasmodic pain in the hypochondrium, waist, abdomen, shoulders, and arms, indicating excessive dampness in the Kidney Meridian. Taking Xuan Feng Wan (Wind-Dispersing Pill) fifty pills results in mild purgation and recovery. However, this should only be taken if the syndrome is confirmed; it must absolutely not be used lightly in deficient persons. (Hongxiangjiao Yongji refers to pathogenic factors stagnating in the lower body, similar to the obstruction in Bi syndrome. However, when this condition attacks, it rushes upward to the chest and heart, causing vomiting and restlessness, which is very dangerous, known as Jue Ni (Rebellious Counterflow) in the *Nei Jing*. Mild cases can be treated by unblocking the meridians, dispersing cold-dampness, harmonizing Yin and Yang, and regulating Qi and Blood, making them easy to treat. Herbs such as Perillae Caulis (Sugeng), Citrus Peel (Fupi), Chaenomeles Fruit (Mugua), Areca Seed (Binglang), Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu), and Angelica Pubescens Root (Duhuo) can all be used. Severe cases involve aversion to cold, high fever, rebellious Qi, vomiting, tendon stiffness entering the abdomen, and extreme restlessness, indicating pathogenic factors rushing into the abdomen, which is even more dangerous and requires heavy use of warming and transforming herbs, such as Cornus Fruit (Zhuyu) and Ginger-Prepared Aconite (Jiang Fu). If over-exploitation leads to a faint pulse on the verge of disappearance, turning into deficiency-cold, the patient often does not recover; one cannot say that Yongji (stagnant disease) precludes tonification.)
Case Records:
One person suffered from Hongxiangjiao, with pain in both ankles radiating to the waist, unbearable day and night. He was moxaed at Yongquan (KI 1) for fifty cones and took Jin Ye Dan (Golden Liquid Pill) for five days, achieving complete recovery. (This condition resembles Painful Bi syndrome.)
A woman suffered from Hongxiangjiao, suddenly experiencing spasmodic pain throughout her limbs and body. Her six pulses were deep and large, indicating excess Stomach Qi. She took thirty pills of Xuan Feng Wan (Wind-Dispersing Pill), achieved purgation, and recovered. (This condition requires careful confirmation before use.)
