Chen Zishan stated: "Vomiting with sound and substance is called 'Ou' (vomiting); vomiting with sound but no substance is called 'Dry Ou'; vomiting with substance but no sound is called 'Tu' (spitting up). Vomitus contains phlegm, while Tu is silent. Vomiting involves the expulsion of gastric contents due to disharmony of Stomach Qi. Although the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) ascends along the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, its Qi should ideally descend. When Qi rebels and ascends instead, vomiting occurs. However, etiologies vary between Cold-Stomach and Heat-Stomach conditions, as well as Food Retention and Qi Deficiency. Since the pathologies differ, treatments must also differ. For all cases of vomiting accompanied by anorexia, it is essential to regulate milk and food intake. Regardless of whether it is Cold or Heat vomiting, if left untreated for a long time, leading to emptiness of Stomach Qi, there is a risk of developing Slow Wind Syndrome (chronic convulsive disorder in infants), which requires utmost prevention. If Slow Wind has already developed, and frequent vomiting of foul-smelling, fishy substances occurs, this is a sign that Stomach Qi is about to perish."
He further stated: "In summer, when children play in the sun, heat may lodge in the Stomach; or if the nursing mother contracts Summerheat and nurses the infant while carrying this heat, or if the infant overconsumes pungent and hot foods, Heat Vomiting often results. The manifestations include red face and lips, five-palm heat (heat sensation in palms, soles, and chest), fewer episodes of vomiting but larger volume of expelled material, and undigested milk curds appearing yellow."

Chen Zishan stated: "For Cold Vomiting, caused by contracting Wind-Cold in winter, or if the nursing mother has internal cold and nurses the infant transmitting this cold, causing cold Qi to enter the abdomen; or due to damaged retained milk, or consumption of raw/cold foods, leading to deficient Stomach unable to receive food, resulting in undigested milk curds, preference for warmth and aversion to cold, cold limbs, deep and faint pulse, frequent vomiting episodes with small volume of expulsion."
