Taste is sweet, nature is warm or slightly cold, non-toxic. It primarily treats evil qi accumulation in the heart and abdomen, brightens the eyes, and treats eye pain, redness, damage, and tearing. It treats eye swelling and ulceration, nasal conditions (character missing in original text, inferred as nasal discharge or similar), and breaks up cardiac stagnation. It benefits Qi and prevents hunger. It grows in Hangu Valley and Baxi. The fruits are harvested during specific lunar phases.
The current supply comes from the north, said to originate from the Pengcheng area. The shape is like Wudou (black beans) in size, round and flat, with grain patterns, resembling walnut kernels or peach pits. Currently, people use them whole with shells for weighing purposes; however, it should be cracked open to take the kernel for weighing. Medical formulas only use it to treat eye diseases; the *Xianjing* (Immortal Classic) uses it to compound Shouzhong Wan (Guarding the Center Pill).
[Note] The character "cai" (harvest) is written thus.
Taste is pungent and bitter, nature is warm or slightly cold, non-toxic. It primarily treats heart and abdominal hernia qi, abdominal pain, benefits Qi, treats inability of children to walk, carbuncles and sores, and genital erosion. For men, it treats residual urinary dribbling; for women, it treats vaginal itching and lower back and spine pain, leg pain and numbness due to wind weakness, five slackness syndromes, and emaciation due to deficiency. It tonifies the middle and benefits Jing (Essence), strengthens sinews and bones, and fortifies willpower. Long-term consumption lightens the body and delays aging. Another name is Chaiqi, another is Chaijie. Those with five leaves are superior. It grows in Hanzhong and Wanqu. The stems are harvested in May and July, and the roots in October, then dried in the shade.
Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) acts as its guide drug; it fears Shed Snake Skin and Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix). Now it is found everywhere in nearby regions, especially abundant in the East. Those with four leaves are also good. Boiling the roots and stems to make wine is very beneficial to humans. Daoists use this to make ash, and also to boil stones; combined with Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix), there are secret methods. The character "jia" (add) is sometimes written as "jia" (family/home).
Nature is slightly warm. It comprehensively treats wind-water toxic swelling and removes evil qi. Xunlu Xiang (Frankincense) and the other six types of incense are essential ingredients for perfumers but are not fully incorporated into medicinal prescriptions; they are only used to treat malignant nodules and toxic swellings, and are quite useful in Daoist formulas. Zhantang (Styrax Tonkinensis) originates from Cenzhou, Jin'an. The highest quality, pure and moist varieties are hard to obtain; many are adulterated with tree bark and Tuo insect feces. Only those that are light in weight are excellent. There is little difference between genuine and fake among the rest, only fine versus coarse distinctions. Foreigners use Bojin Xiang (Borneolum Syntheticum or similar aromatic resin) to brighten the eyes. Baitan (Santalum album) reduces wind-induced swelling. Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) is listed separately in the Superior Category.
[Note] Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Qinggui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Jigu (Gallus gallus domesticus bone), Matihuang (possibly a variant name or error, context suggests wood type), and Jianxiang are all from the same tree. The leaves resemble citrus leaves, flowers are white, fruits resemble Areca nut, large as mulberries, purple in color and pungent in taste. The bark is green, and the wood resembles Zelkova or Willow.
Xunlu Xiang (Frankincense) resembles white gum and originates from Tianzhu (India) and Shanyu Kingdom. Jiti Xiang (Elettaria cardamomum seed or Clove bud depending on era interpretation, here likely related to aromatic spice) has leaves and bark resembling millet trees, flowers like plum blossoms, and seeds like jujube pits; this is the female tree and is not used for incense. The male tree flowers but does not fruit; its flowers are harvested and fermented to produce incense, originating from Kunlun and south of Jiaozhou and Aizhou. Zhantang tree resembles the orange tree; boiling branches and leaves produces an incense resembling black sugar, originating from south of Jiaozhou and Guangzhou. There is also Dingxiang Gen (Syzygium aromaticum root), which is pungent and warm, treating various wind-toxic swellings. This is a different tree, with leaves resembling oak, growing several zhang high, evergreen in winter. Only the root can treat wind-heat toxic swelling and is not suitable for heart/abdominal issues; it is not Jiti Xiang. Zhantang Xiang treats malignant sores and removes evil qi, originating from Jin'an.
