[Agriolimax]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats hemiplegia caused by thief-wind (pathogenic wind), tendon逸out, and rectal prolapse; also treats convulsions and spasms associated with jing-xian (epilepsy-like disorders). Also known as Lingli, Tuo, or Fuwo. Grows in the ponds and marshes of Mount Tai, as well as under shady sandy stone walls. Harvested in August.
Agriolimax lacks a shell and should not bear the name "Wo" (snail); the one called "Fuwo" is alternatively named Wo Niu (garden snail). Those growing in pond/marsh sandy stones are likely the current Shan Wo (mountain snail), or perhaps referring to its head shape resembling a snail larva. The common name Wo Niu uses the character "Gua" (melon), so the character "Wo" is also pronounced "Gua". This refers to Zhuangzi's phrase "war on the horn of a snail." Agriolimax falls within the category of the Thirty-Six Zodiac Animals and belongs to the class of four-horned insects. It is considered the essence of the Ying Shi star; medical practitioners rarely use it nowadays.
[Note]: Regarding the Thirty-Six Zodiac Animals: The sign corresponding to Hai involves shooting people. Its abdomen mixed with dried feces, burned to ash, mainly treats jaundice; it belongs to the pig category. Tao Hongjing's identification of it as Yu (slug/snail) is a significant error. Furthermore, *Shan Hai Jing* states: KT has a pig-like body and human face, sounds like an infant, and eats humans/beasts. *Er Ya* states: KT type runs fast and eats humans. Neither refers to Agriolimax. Agriolimax is indeed the shell-less Wo Li.
[Hirudo]
Taste: Salty, Bitter. Nature: Neutral, Slightly Cold. Toxicity: Toxic. Indications: Mainly expels evil blood, blood stasis, amenorrhea; breaks blood masses (Xue Jia), accumulations (Ji Ju), treats infertility, promotes urination, and can induce abortion. Also known as [Name missing], Zhi Zhang.
Grows in the ponds and marshes of Lei Ze. Harvested in May and June, then sun-dried.
[Name missing], currently there are several types. The one used here is Ma Qi (a type of leech), specifically those that bite humans and have blood in their bellies; dried specimens are preferred. Mountain [Leech] and other small toxic varieties are not used.
When King Chu ate cold pickled vegetables and swallowed them, they effectively removed accumulations. Although this may be attributed to divine protection, it is also due to the inherent nature of the substance.
[Note]: This animal includes grass leeches, water leeches, and Ma Qi, all of which suck blood from cattle, horses, and humans. Currently, folk practice mostly uses smaller water leeches, which are highly effective; it is not necessary to require those that have eaten until their bellies are full of human blood. Grass leeches reside on deep mountain grass; when people walk past, they attach to the calves and thighs unnoticed, reproducing within the flesh, causing significant harm. Mountain dwellers have their own treatment methods for this.
