Salty, cold in nature, toxic. Primarily treats evil qi in the chest, painful heat accumulation, deviation of the body (pì), facial swelling, and diseases caused by contact with raw lacquer or burning lacquer (referred to as "zhi shu" in the text, related to lacquer poisoning). It resolves stagnation, dissipates blood stasis, heals lacquer sores, nourishes sinews, and benefits qi. The claws primarily treat retained placenta and induce abortion. It lives in pools and marshes such as the Yi River and Luo River, and can be caught at any time. It neutralizes the toxicity of Datura metel (Lángdàng) and lacquer. There are many types of crabs; Scylla serrata (yóu móu), fiddler crabs (yōng jiàn), and other varieties are among them, but none are used in medicine. Only common crabs have significant medicinal value. Immortal prescriptions use it to dissolve raw lacquer into a liquid for consumption to achieve longevity. If irrigated with black dog blood and burned after three days, various mice will gather. Crabs that have not yet experienced frost are highly toxic, said to be due to consuming water Datura (shuǐ làngdàng). Humans who ingest this poison and do not receive immediate treatment often die. Crabs with eyes facing each other are also lethal. Consumption of winter melon juice, Perilla juice, and Rhubarb pills can cure the poisoning. By the sea, there is another type called Péngyuè crab; those who eat it without recognizing it nearly die, sighing: "My unfamiliarity with the *Erya* led me astray by those urging learning."
Pungent, cold in nature, toxic. Primarily treats facial carbuncles and swelling, skin itching and pain, frequent abdominal discomfort, benefits qi in the abdomen, breaks up cold-heat accumulations, eliminates palpitations and fright, and removes facial hyperpigmentation. Grows in valleys of Pu region. Collected in October and December. Adversely interacts with Ampelopsis japonica (Báilián) and Clematis chinensis (Báiwēi). Physicians no longer use it, and laypeople do not recognize it. [Note] *Li's Materia Medica* states: This is the feces of the flying squirrel (Fúyì/bat). In the entry for Fúyì, it is named Xiānshǔ (Immortal Mouse), and discussed within the Fúyì section.
Males have slight toxicity. Primarily tonifies essence and qi, strengthens sexual function, prevents fatigue during intercourse, and stops seminal emission. Feces are warm in nature and non-toxic. Primarily treats borborygmus, heat in the middle jiao, xiaoke (wasting-thirst syndrome), wind-bi syndrome, and urticaria. The original silkworm is reared for a second time, commonly known as Wèicán. Daoists use its moth to stop seminal emission, and its male cocoon is added to formulas containing Atractylodes macrocephala (Zhú). The feces, named Cánshā (Silkworm excrement), are widely used in various prescriptions, not only for moxibustion-like warming therapies against wind.
Sweet, toxic. Primarily treats five types of hemorrhoids, sores, and kills various parasites. It can climb trees to eat vine flowers, resembling an eel. Caught and cooked for food. When roasted, it is used to fumigate wood and bamboo to repel insects. The ointment treats various sores; there is also Scylla serrata (Yóumóu), which is similar but shorter. [Note] This ointment also treats ear pain caused by insects. The giant salamander (Níyú) has four feet and can climb trees. Tao Hongjing claimed that Mánlí (Anguilla marmorata) is Níyú, which is an erroneous identification.
