[Leiwan]
Taste: bitter, salty. Nature: cold, slightly cold. Toxicity: slightly toxic.
Main actions: Kills three types of parasites (Ascaris, Enterobius, Taenia), expels toxic qi, clears heat in the stomach. Beneficial for men, but not for women. When made into a paste for external massage, it treats various diseases in children. Expels pathogenic factors, treats aversion to wind and sweating, resolves heat accumulation in the skin, and addresses accumulations, gu poison, white worms, and continuous expulsion of Taenia solium (pork tapeworm). Long-term use causes impotence.
Alternative name: Leishi. The red variety is fatal.
Habitat: Grows in valleys of Shicheng or in the soil of Hanzhong.
Harvest: Roots are collected in August and dried in the sun.
Interactions: Lishi (fruit of Litchi chinensis) and Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) serve as guiding herbs; incompatible with Gegen (Puerariae Radix).
Current distribution: Found between Jianping and Yidu; fruits grow in clusters connected like pills.
Note on Classics: The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states "beneficial for men," which contradicts reality.
[Commentary] Leiwan is actually the sclerotium of bamboo. It has no stems or vines, grows sporadically, and does not connect to each other. It is currently found in Fangzhou and Jinzhou.
[Soushu]
Taste: pungent, bitter. Nature: cold, slightly cold. Toxicity: non-toxic.
Main actions: Clears heat in the body and skin, expels pathogenic factors, stops enuresis, promotes urination through the water passages, clears heat in the stomach, directs qi downward, and can be used as a bathing decoction.
Alternative name: Jugu.
Habitat: Grows in valleys of Jue'er River and old mound ruins in fields.
Harvest: Collected in April.
Interactions: Loulu (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae) serves as a guiding herb.
Li Yun states that Soushu is also known as Yanglu, Mujing, and Kongshu. The bark is white, hollow inside, and often jointed. The fruit resembles Lycii Fructus (Goji berry), ripens in winter, is red, and tastes sweet and bitter. By later dynasties, few recognized it; this is the true Soushu, not the climbing Yanglu grown on artificial fences. Li Dangzhi's statement regarding Mujing is not significantly erroneous, but his misapplication to Soushu is likely a mistake.
Furthermore, Soushu differs from Kongshu. "Jue'er" is suspected to be a typo for "Xiong'er," referring to Xiong'er Mountain, as there is no place named Jue'er.
[Commentary] Soushu resembles Kongshu in shape. The tree is about one zhang high, with white bark. Its fruits ripen in August and September, are red, resemble Lycii Fructus, taste bitter, and always grow in pairs, differing from Kongshu. Kongshu, also known as Yanglu, produces pod-like fruits, unlike Soushu.
