Treats heat-induced vomiting and bitter taste. Deficiency-heat vexation, palpitations with fright, and insomnia. Phlegm-Qi rebelling upward.
The Wendan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction) is based on Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction). Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings) and Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) are blended evenly. (Erchen Tang plus Zhu Ru and Zhi Shi.) For insomnia, palpitations with fright, deficiency-heat vexation, and vomiting. When the sun warms and the wind is gentle, the Wood Qi extends.
Chen Xiuyuan said: Erchen Tang is a formula to calm the Stomach and dispel phlegm. Adding Zhu Ru clears deficiency-heat above the diaphragm; adding Zhi Shi removes phlegm obstruction in the Triple Burner. Once heat is removed and phlegm cleared, the Gallbladder naturally becomes tranquil and harmonious; this is what is meant by "warm." To "warm" it is actually to cool it. If there is true cold in the Gallbladder accompanied by timidity, Longmu Guizhi Tang (Dragon Bone, Oyster Shell, and Cinnamon Twig Decoction) with Fuzi (Aconite Root) should be used.
Treats heart and abdominal pain, as well as hypochondriac pain and other symptoms. ○ Pulse is flooding and rapid, or when taking hot medicines aggravates the condition; this formula works miraculously.
Jinlingzi San (Melia Toosendan Powder) is wonderfully effective. One must distinguish the frequency of onset and cessation of various pains. (Pain due to Fire may come and go.) Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome) and Jinlingzi (Melia Fruit) are taken with wine.
Chen Xiuyuan said: Jinlingzi guides the Ministerial Fire of the Pericardium downward, exiting through the Small Intestine and Bladder. Yanhusuo harmonizes all pains throughout the upper and lower body. When combined properly, the effect is miraculous.
Effective for treating heart pain and epigastric pain.
Even more effective for women.
There is a wonderful formula for various pains in the heart and abdomen. Danshen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root) constitutes ten parts as the principal guide. Tanxiang (Sandalwood Wood) and Sharen (Amomum Fruit), one part each, serve as assistants. Upon swallowing, one knows clearly that the efficacy is manifest. (Danshen 1 liang, Tanxiang and Sharen 1 qian each, boiled in 1.5 cups of water until reduced to 0.7 cup, then taken.)
Chen Xiuyuan said: Stable.
Treats pain at the heart's gate (epigastrium/cardiac region) where various hot medicines have failed. ○ This also belongs to Qi pain.
Long-standing pain originally stems from congealed stagnant Qi. If辛热 (acrid-hot) medicines are administered, pain increases frequently. Heavy use of Baihe (Lily Bulb) and other light-clearing agents is required. Wuyao (Lindera Root) decocted together is equally pure and accurate. (Baihe 1 liang, Wuyao 3 qian, boiled in 2 cups of water until reduced to 0.7 cup, then taken.)
Chen Xiuyuan said: I obtained this formula from Haitan, and its use has been verified many times. ○ The above three formulas all treat various pains in the Heart and Stomach, suitable for those who do not respond to hot medicines. Ancient practitioners treated pain using the method of "unblocking" (Tong). However, the methods of unblocking vary. Regulating Qi to harmonize Blood, and regulating Blood to harmonize Qi, constitutes unblocking. Directing rebellious Qi downward, and dispersing central knotting laterally, also constitutes unblocking. Assisting the deficient to achieve unblocking, and warming the cold to achieve unblocking—these are all methods of unblocking. If one insists that only purgation constitutes unblocking, that would be absurd. This theory originates from Gao Shizong's *Yixue Zhengzhuan* (Correct Transmission of Medicine). Shizong's given name was Shi Shi; he was from Zhejiang Province. He authored widely circulated books such as *Lingshu Zhijie* (Direct Explanation of the Spiritual Pivot) and *Suwen Zhijie* (Direct Explanation of the Basic Questions).
