Wei Yang (Defensive Yang) fails to consolidate, resulting in profuse sweating like a vast ocean. One must use Huangqi Fuzi Tang (Astragalus and Prepared Aconite Decoction). (Huangqi [Astragali Radix] 1 liang, Shu Fuzi [Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix] 5 qian, decocted in water and taken orally.) Fuzi warms the Yuan Qi (Original Qi) of the Dantian; with Huangqi, it secures against collapse and guards its native territory. (The Qi that circulates in the skin and hair is the Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), which protects the exterior. Wei Qi is rooted in Yuan Qi. Although Huangqi specifically travels through the Wei level, accompanied by Fuzi, it can rescue the Qi on the verge of collapse due to profuse sweating, guarding it in its native territory, thus stopping the sweating naturally.)
Chen Xiuyuan stated: The *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) records that Huangqi has a sweet flavor and slightly warm nature, and is non-toxic. It treats chronic ulcers from carbuncles and sores, expels pus and relieves pain, severe leprosy-like diseases, the five types of hemorrhoids, and rat-hole fistulas. It tonifies deficiency and treats hundred ailments in children. This classic contains only these thirty-three characters, all indicating that it takes advantage of its light texture and bland taste to preferentially travel to the skin and hair. Therefore, it is used for severe wind-carbuncle-sores and any external conditions with excessive pus and blood loss, merely to tonify the deficiency of skin and flesh. It also states it treats hundred ailments in children because light and thin substances are insufficient for adults to rely upon. Only children, whose meridians are not yet developed and whose Qi and Blood are both weak, should not undergo harsh tonification. Receiving this mild tonifying substance, their hundred ailments can be generally treated. Carefully pondering the intent of the classics, how can one claim it greatly tonifies Yuan Qi to stop sweating? Just as Liu Huang Tang (Six Yellow Decoction) uses great coldness to eliminate heat; when heat is eliminated, sweating stops. Qifu Tang (Astragalus and Aconite Decoction) uses great heatness to restore Yang; when Yang is restored, sweating stops. Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Windscreen Powder) releases the muscle layer to drive out wind; when wind is eliminated, sweating stops. These three formulas do not focus on Huangqi, but rather benefit from Huangqi's lightness and agility, traveling directly to the skin, achieving effects more rapidly. For hundreds of years, no one has mentioned this. Indeed, the Way of Medicine is difficult!
Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Windscreen Powder) primarily treats various winds. To stop sweating, one must first seek unobstructed flow. (When wind injures the Wei Qi, sweating occurs spontaneously. When Huangqi is combined with Fangfeng, its efficacy increases significantly. Because these two herbs travel together to the exterior, they induce a slight perspiration, allowing the pathogenic wind to resolve through this slight sweat. Thus, the Wei Qi is free from pathogenic disturbance, and sweating ceases.) The release lies in Huangqi and Fangfeng (Huangqi and Fangfeng are mistakenly regarded by contemporary physicians as antiperspirants, causing countless harms.) The consolidation lies in Baizhu. (When the exterior wind is resolved by Huangqi and Fangfeng, there is no longer external disturbance; when the Zang organ Qi is stabilized by Baizhu, there is internal support.) Heat is eliminated (Wind belongs to Yang pathogens, and Yang implies heat.) Dampness is removed (Taiyang corresponds to damp earth; when dampness and heat interact and steam, symptoms of spontaneous sweating and fever arise.) It governs the Middle Palace (Baizhu tonifies the Qi of the Middle Jiao, thus it can stop sweating and eliminate heat. Fangfeng, Huangqi, and Baizhu in equal parts are ground into powder and taken with wine.)
Chen Xiuyuan stated: Regarding Huangqi as a surface-consolidating herb has caused errors throughout history. Previous sages found its application ineffective, leading to the contradictory theory that "it stops sweating when present and induces sweating when absent," and quacks distinguished between roasted use (stopping sweat) and raw use (inducing sweat). The *Shennong Bencao Jing* remains available; why abandon it without reading? My annotations on this section are very detailed. Reflect carefully, and it will be like clearing clouds to see the sun; those who understand will know themselves.
