Cinnamon Twig Powder (Guizhi Mo) 2 qian, mixed with half boiling water and half cold water, stirred into a thick paste of about half a cup, consumed rapidly; for severe cases, two doses are taken. Zhao Xuande from Nanyang suffered from this condition, and the effect was miraculous after taking it; his nephew also had hematemesis, which was completely cured after two doses.
Wu Chongqing, the Chancellor, suddenly experienced hematemesis. Sun Zhao used clam powder clarified with ice water, ground finely, added with a small amount of Cinnabar (Chensha), and administered 2 qian mixed with rice drink, three times daily, after which he stabilized. Sun Zhao kept this prescription secret. Wu obtained it from Han Zigong's formula: Cinnabar (Zhusha) 1 qian, genuine clam powder (Bengfen) 0.5 qian.
In cases of hematemesis or hemoptysis, the cause is often excessive accumulated heat, overeating, or injury to the stomach collaterals due to sexual indulgence or strenuous exercise. Alternatively, fright, palpitations, or anger may cause Qi to rebel upward instead of descending normally. Blood follows Qi and stagnates in the chest; over time, this leads to hematemesis or hemoptysis. It is appropriate to take Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) to harmonize Ying and Wei, regulate Qi, stop bleeding, improve appetite, and clear heat. One must strictly avoid hot noodles, fried or roasted foods, seafood, pork, chicken, and all other wind-inducing substances. Alcohol should not be consumed, and meals should not be too full. Maintaining proper balance between hunger and fullness will naturally keep the chest and diaphragm open and ensure smooth flow of Qi and Blood. In the autumn of Guiyou year during the Shaoxing era, Su Shaolian suffered from this illness, which was extremely alarming; various medicines were ineffective. Coincidentally, Jiang Changyan, the Vice Prefect, transmitted this prescription, and he recovered after taking it. Later, it proved effective repeatedly when used to help others, and was passed down by Taoguang.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (2 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (remove rhizome), Baifuling (Poria) (remove black skin), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (each 1 liang), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Baihe (Lilii Bulbus) (3 fen, remove heart). Grind all into powder. Take 1.5 qian per dose, with one cup of water, three slices of fresh ginger, and one jujube. Decoct until reduced to 0.6 cup, take warm, three times daily.
Transmitted by Zhang Caiyi, whose son suffered from the disease; taking this prescription stopped the bleeding immediately, proving effective repeatedly upon recurrence. Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (wash to remove soil, dry by baking). Grind into fine powder. Use high-quality genuine Beijing ink, grind with freshly drawn water to obtain about half a cup of ink solution. Divide into two doses, mix with Shudihuang powder and take. The ink must be pine-soot ink.
Another prescription: Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (each 2 liang). Grind these three ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, three times a day, swallowed with good wine on an empty stomach.
