Yao Kewen, a senior official, suffered greatly from this condition and was cured after taking the medicine several times.
Dried Chaenomelis Fructus (Papaya) (ground into fine powder, taken with Da Sheng San decoction)
This prescription was circulated in the Shangshu Tang (Department of State Affairs) herbal decoction office at the capital.
Take Chaenomelis Fructus (Papaya), remove the pulp and seeds, steam it together with Shi Hua San until cooked, then grind them together into a fine powder. If the mixture is too sticky or mushy, add more Shi Hua San until it can be formed into pills, sized like Sophora japonica seeds.
The Elder of Jinshan Temple recounted this prescription at a vegetarian banquet hosted by Zhang Xianxue at Ganlu Temple. He stated that he previously suffered from Hongxiangjiao (Hongxiangjiao, a term often referring to gout or rheumatic pain in the feet). He had received this prescription from a monk in Tiantai Mountain, steamed mugwort leaves and took them orally, which gradually alleviated his symptoms. Later, while residing at Jinshan Temple, he climbed mountains and waded through streams daily, causing his feet to become sore and heavy again. He obtained this prescription from fellow monks there, combined it with his previous regimen, and felt significantly lighter and healthier than before.
Gubenzi (Psoraleae Fructus, Psoralea corylifolia) (stir-fried)
Boshang Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus, Fennel) (soaked in wine overnight, stir-fried)
Huluba (Trigonellae Semen, Fenugreek) (stir-fried)
Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, Achyranthes bidentata) (soaked in wine overnight)
Roucongrong (Cistanche Deserticolae Caulis, Cistanche deserticola) (soaked in wine overnight)
Take four liang of each of the above five herbs, stir-fry until the fibers break and they turn yellow, then grind them together into a fine powder.
Take four liang of Mugwort Leaves (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), remove stems and weigh them. Cut four large Chaenomelis Fructus (Papaya) into box-like shapes, remove all pulp, fill with the mugwort leaves, tie tightly with hemp thread, and steam for three days and nights.
Sheng Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, Prepared Aconite Root) (one piece, peeled, ground into fine powder)
Gan Shibing (Dried Persimmon Fruit) (fourteen pieces, stems removed, not sliced)
Wuhui Jiu (Pure Wine, without ash additives) three sheng. Boil the Fuzi and Persimmon in the wine in a stone, clay, or silver vessel until the wine is completely evaporated. Remove and grind the mixture into a paste. Mix with dough made from overnight-steamed steamed bread (Su Zheng Bing), adjusting the moisture content appropriately. Form into pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take thirty pills per dose. In the morning on an empty stomach, take one dose with salted wine. Before going to sleep, take another thirty pills with cold water.
First, massage the swollen area with meat, then scrape the surface of the chopping block (Zhen) to obtain a substance to apply to the swelling. Then, apply hot stir-fried bran and fermented soybeans (Chidou) as a compress, and bind tightly with a cloth. The swelling should completely subside after one night.
Treats Hongxiangjiao Liuzhu (Hongxiangjiao flowing and accumulating), where the limbs and fingers are swollen and painful, unable to bend or extend. Shen Tu Fujian (Official Title: Judge of the Circuit).
Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) (remove Rehmanniae Radix, add Aconitum root, add ginger, decoct and take according to standard method). Since then, whenever his illness flares up, taking this prescription always brings about a cure.
Also treats all kinds of swelling and toxic sores.
Gansui (Kansui Radix, Kansui root) (ground into fine powder, mixed with water and applied topically to the swollen area)
Decoct a single herb, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice Root), in concentrated form and take orally; the swelling will immediately dissipate. These two herbs have contrary properties. They must be purchased by two different people and stored separately; they must never be mixed together. Han Yong, a local official named Pianzi from Qingliu, suffered from this condition. After one dose, seven or eight parts of the illness were eliminated; after a second dose, he was cured. He said he obtained this from a horse and cattle merchant. The physician's intent was precisely to utilize the principle of mutual antagonism and synergy. Thus, Gansui is applied externally, while Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice Root) draws it inward. The efficacy is akin to a magnet attracting iron needles.
