The orthodox classics transmitted by the Yellow Emperor are the legacy teachings of ancient sages and serve as the exemplary standards for later generations. Therefore, one must first clarify the acupoints where meridian qi flows and circulates to identify their origins. If one casually follows heterodox theories, it will deviate from the correct pathways of the Zang-Fu organs and meridians. Thus, the Classics state: The meridians of the Three Yang of the Hand run from the hand to the head; the meridians of the Three Yin of the Hand run from the chest to the hand; the meridians of the Three Yang of the Foot run from the head to the foot; and the meridians of the Three Yin of the Foot run from the foot to the chest. This is referred to as the day-and-night circulation and the convergence of Yin and Yang. It is also said that needling should be shallow in spring and summer, and deep in autumn and winter. This is because during spring and summer, Yang Qi resides in the upper part of the body, and human Qi also tends upward, so shallow insertion is appropriate. During autumn and winter, Yang Qi resides in the lower part, and human Qi also tends downward, so deep insertion is appropriate. Therefore, in spring and summer, one aims to "bring forth a Yin" (draw Yin Qi up), and in autumn and winter, one aims to "bring forth a Yang" (draw Yang Qi down). However, when aiming to "bring forth a Yin" in the warm seasons of spring and summer, upon initial needle insertion, one should press deeply to the level of the Kidney and Liver regions. Once Deqi (arrival of Qi) is obtained, guide and draw the Yin Qi upward. This is the general principle for why one must "bring forth a Yang" in autumn and winter.
In spring, puncture the Jing-Well points; in summer, puncture the Ying-Spring points; in late summer, puncture the Shu-Stream points; in autumn, puncture the Jing-River points; and in winter, puncture the He-Sea points.
